Hewisi tunes
The sounds of the thammattama, geta bera, dawula, yak bera will once again blend in unique rhythm with the flute, to bring you the fifth annual hewisi band concert, Perpetual Sounds, organised by the hewisi band of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia. Celebrating their 25th anniversary last year, the band is back again in triumph bringing you the hewisi band concert for the fifth consecutive year.

The College band which has been performing over the past few years, maintains a high standard. “It was in 2000 that we decided to have a concert of this magnitude. The concert will be featuring the hewisi bands of Royal College, D.S. Senanayake College, St. Paul’s, Milagiriya, Museus College, Methodist College, Bishop’s College and S. Thomas’ College.

“We are well known for doing something different each year, being the first hewisi band to have featured electric guitars (at New Chapter in Music), and a magnificent drum orchestra of a very high standard. We continue to keep the audience guessing about what our next step would be,” adds the project chairperson, Thamaranga Gunasena.

The college band is blessed with great talent, and among them Roshayne playing thammattama, Dinesh Perera on geta bera, Shanel Fonseka playing the dawula, Dharshana Jayasekara with the Cymbal and the head of the flutists’, Ravith Goonewardena, combining with the rest of the band are sure to inspire the gathering. “Having undergone stressful practice sessions and a lot of guidance the boys are well set for this year’s concert,” says the master-in-charge Sarath Wijayawardana.

The concert will be held on Saturday, October 8 at 7.00 p.m., at the College chapel steps. Tickets are available at the College office and at the gate.
