Milanka price index crosses 3,000 point mark
Milanka Price Index (MPI), the Colombo Stock Exchange index of Sri Lanka’s blue chip companies, crossed a historical milestone of 3,000 points at the close of business on Tuesday September 20, 2005.

The index closed at 3,019 up by 29 point compared to that of previous day’s close. The Colombo Stock Exchange introduced the Milanka Price Index on January 4, 1999. The MPI comprises of 25 companies and they are selected by considering their performances over the last quarter.

The base index was set as 1000 points as at December 31, 1998. Colombo Stock Exchange initially reviewed and revised the companies to be included in the MPI on a yearly basis. However considering the increased level of activity and the need for the MPI to represent the changes in the market conditions more regularly, the CSE reviews and revises the companies to be included in the MPI on a quarterly basis commencing from the first quarter of 2005.
The index represents around 10% of the listed companies and accounts for around 40% of the total market capitalization of the CSE.
