What do dogs do –humans bite more than they bark
According to the laws, the city must remain an attractive place to live and therefore, all stray dogs must be seized. Once seized (about 60-70 at a time), the dogs are kept at the Pound for a duration of 48 hours, during which time if they are not claimed, authorities have the right to dispose of them.

However, sometimes the dogs are left in the Pound for about a month, before they are killed, he said. Of the total number of dogs impounded, less than 5% of them are re-homed, said Dr. Eleperuma. Therefore, more than 95% of the dogs seized and impounded at any given time, are put to death. “Every 10-12 days a group of dogs have to be killed, that’s approximately 300-350 dogs a month, he said.

The dogs are killed using a lethal injection now and not gassed like in the past, he said Of course the killing is only until the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) launches a three-pronged strategy to overcome the stray dog problem in the country; namely, registration and vaccination of domestic dogs, and the removal of stray dogs from public areas, says Dr. S.D. Eleperuma, Chief Municipal Veterinary Surgeon – CMC.

The Mayor refused to comment on the issue. What do dogs do until then – but linger on death row, and who knows even then the new laws may not be dog friendly either, especially the ‘’removal from public areas’’ part. The laws are all bark – no bite?
