SLFP campaign begins on Sept. 6
The ruling SLFP will officially launch its presidential election campaign on September 6. This is soon after President Chandrika Kumaratunga returns from a state visit to China.

On Thursday the SLFP announced that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse would be the Presidential candidate and Anura Bandaranaike the Prime Ministerial candidate. Mr. Rajapakse told The Sunday Times that the decision to nominate him was a great honour because his party had unanimously expressed its fullest confidence in him.

He pledged he would dedicate himself to working towards the betterment of the people of Sri Lanka and added that he would not be deterred by the futile mud slinging campaign against him. Mr. Rajapakse soon after being named as the Presidential candidate visited the Kelaniya temple.
