Come listen to vibrant voices
By Ishani Ranasinghe
It’s another Monday morning and I am at St. Peter’s College to talk to a group of young enthusiastic Interactors about one of their projects. A few minutes into the interview the rest of the crowd made their way to the front getting ready to start the practice. With the powerful voices blending well together, the sounds of choristers warming up their voices steadily grew louder… almost a hint that it was time for the organisers and myself to move away to a different location.

Meeting the Interactors of St. Bridget’s Convent and St. Sebastian’s College I got an insight into what Vibrant Voices, a choir concert, was all about. Their main finance project for their Interact year, it was St. Sebastian’s College who invited St. Bridget’s Convent to join them in organising the concert.

As the organisers pointed out usually when it comes to interact projects they tend to mostly be rock concerts or some sort of competition. The type of projects that are being organised have become predictable and somewhat typecast. “None of the Interact Clubs have organised a choir concert as far as I can remember,” says Tanya Hettiarachchi. This is what got St. Bridget’s Convent interested in joining up with the project and for the past few months both schools have worked effortlessly to make Vibrant Voices a success.

With eight schools taking part in the concert the variation that can be expected is wide and interesting. “There will be a mix of everything,” says Janeen Fernando a member of the organising committee. From modern pop songs to Latin hymns they are going to have it all, thereby bringing in a variety that would cater to everyone.

Not having all that much time on their hands the participants have been hard at practice for the past few weeks trying to put together everything needed to guarantee a vibrant performance. Because of the calibre of the event and the number of schools they wanted to work with, the organisers admit that at first they found it hard to get all the choristers together.

“There were so many of them and we had to speak to so many schools,” Janeen said adding that finally apart from the choristers from the two organising schools the choristers from St. Peter’s College, St. Joseph’s College, St. Benedict’s College, Gateway International School, Wycherly International School and Ladies’ College came forward to perform at the concert.

Participants from varied age groups, different interests and likings coming together to perform on one night. The result… an evening of some of the most unforgettable performances, for sure. Speaking about what the audience can expect for the evening, the schools will be performing three items each with there being three joint performances as well. Each school was given the choice of a line-up they preferred which saw a repertoire of songs that would definitely have the audience toe-tapping.

Organising a project of such a calibre has been no easy task. “When we first started it didn’t strike us that it would be this hard,” says Taniya Perera. As for what the experience has been like they all agree that it has been really great and they have met different characters, according to them both fun and entertaining.

Vibrant Voices will come alive on June 10 at the BMICH. Tickets will be available at the schools that are performing. Tickets are promised at Rs.750, 400 and 250. The Co-sponsors for the event are Hutch, Australian Education Academy (Pvt) Ltd and Kent.
