‘Bath Amma’: Dishing out family sentiments
‘Bath Amma’ direceted by Gihan D., is now being telecast on Swarnavahini every Saturday at 7.00pm. ‘Bath Amma’ is the newest teledrama to hit the small screen.

‘Bath Amma’ includes a talented cast Geetha Kanthi Jayakody, Asela Jayakody, Nihal Fernando, Priya Ranasinghe, Gayani Gisanthika, Maduwanthi Wickramanayake, Gihan Fernando, Manel Wanaguru, Chinthaka Prasanga, Rebecca Nirmalie, Kamal Jayakody, Gamini Jayalath, Praveena Virajini, Majula Moragaha, Manohari Wimalatunga, Dinusha Lakmali, Amila Chathuranga, Rohini Roshini, Vindhya Madusankani, Nimal Pallewatte, Rohitha Dias, Keerthi Ranjith Peiris, Chandika Nanayakkara, Sujith Premakumara, Janaka Jayakody and Nimali Shereen.

The story is centred on a rural woman - Bath Amma (Geetha Kanthi) who loses her husband at a young age and is isolated with two children. The widow befriends a postal peon (Asela Jayakody) while she goes to obtain her husband’s pension. He later cajoles her to the city where he lives in a shanty. Before moving to the city, she is forced to hand over her children - one to an orphanage and the other to a well to do family. But she does not realize that the peon and his henchmen had actually sold her child. She migrates to the city and gradually gets accustomed to the slum life. She sells rice packets and becomes popularly known as ‘Bath Amma’. This is basically a story that highlights the plight of the poor and down trodden and how the affluent try to exploit their weaknesses.

The story has dramatic turns and twists and should be a good family entertainer. ‘Bath Amma’ is a story based on a novel written by Maduwanthi Wickramanayake whose first was ‘Visirunu Malpethi’ Bath Amma is produced by Bandula Weerakkody while the story and screenplay is by Maduwanthi Wickramanayake. Lakshman Wickramatilaka handled the camera while Praveena Virajini Wickramanayake was the assistant director.
