Press complaints body goes North to create awareness
The Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka (PCCSL) conducted an awareness programme for journalists and civil society leaders in Jaffna from March 27 to 30, as part of the PCCSL's island-wide information campaign.

This programme consisted of a series of workshops for journalists and editors and seminars for civil society leaders and students of the Media Research and Training Centre (MRTC) of the Jaffna University, a press release from the PCCSL states.

During the course of this programme, the PCCSL representatives also visited all the regional newspaper offices in Jaffna and held meetings with publishers, editors and journalists.

The journalists based in the North maintained that they had a long tradition of self-regulation and commended the PCCSL for the services it was rendering both to the public and the media to resolve complaints against newspaper articles. The PCCSL representatives explained that they were committed to live up to their slogan "fast, fair and free" - resolving complaints speedily in a manner that was fair both to the complainant and the respondent newspaper and providing high quality services free of charge.

The PCCSL has received and followed up on approximately 300 complaints and communications over the last 17 months. The majority of these have been resolved through conciliation with the goodwill and support of the respondent editors, the release adds.

Since its inception in October 2003, the PCCSL has conducted several workshops and training seminars in various parts of the country in collaboration with journalist associations and civil society groups interested in fostering a free and responsible press in Sri Lanka and protecting the rights of the readers.

The PCCSL's programme was organised in collaboration with the MRTC, under the leadership of its Director, Dr. Senthivel Arulselvam and coordinated by the PCCSL's Complaints Officer in charge of the Tamil Press, Ameen Hussein.

The CEO of the PCCSL, Manique Mendis, Adviser from Sweden Johan Romare and English Complaints Officer, Vasana Wickremasena were also involved in conducting this programme.

Media association and civil society groups who are interested in conducting similar programmes for their members are invited to contact the PCCSL on Tel. No. 001-5333006.
