‘Flag & Whistle’ : Luxury dining by the Port
By Sanath Weerasuriya
Many restaurants mushroomed in the city during the last twelve months and some have failed to hold the ground. But new concepts always stand tall and get popular day by day. ‘Flag & Whistle’ at Setmil Building in Colombo 15 has gained popularity with Colombo’s posh society.

The restaurant lies by the side of the Colombo Port and the ambience is in par with a ship. Generous floor space, a high ceiling, wood panelling and muted lighting combine for a warm, comfortable atmosphere.

The most unique feature at ‘Flag & Whistle’ is the view. While the port dominates the foreground, it takes nothing away from this breathtaking spectacle and from here, the sunset is truly a facinating view.

Inside the restaurant, the most attractive is the bar, which is just like a ship’s cocktail deck and regular dining tables or plush sofas. A traditional ship’s lift takes the guest up to the lounge, which is a small private area that can accomodate 20- 25 pax and this intimate area can be booked for private functions at no extra cost.

The outdoor dining area ‘beer garden’ is a novelty of dining on a glass plarformwith fish swimming directly under the feet.. Flag & Whistle caters mainly German cuisine, but the menu consists of Western and Sri Lankan dishes.

Also can be fond a number of western and eastern specialties such as Japanese ,Chinese, Korean, Thai and Indian. The desserts are splendid and the beverage list of offers wide variety.

‘The restaurant serves one of the best fine dining delights in the city and the most popular one is German Cuisine’said Pradeep Perera, the Chief Chef of ‘Flag & Whistle’ .

‘The pricing at ‘Flag & Whistle’ is average. We do not want to keep our prices at sky high level. All we want do is to make it affordable to everyone’ said Sanath Marasinghe, the Manager of the place.

A live band and dancing is on every Friday night and plans are being made for more future entertainment such as dance competitions, more live artistes. The large TV screen also provides much entertainment , when a band is not in action.

‘Flag & Whistle’ conceptualised and run by the ‘father of Oktoberfest’ Paul Bischof and Arjuna Hettiarchchi. The Flag & Whistle has ‘Tourist Restaurant Category A’ certification and in aiming to keep this standard, allows no shorts, slippers or pets within its premises.
