It’s Christmas time in the city
By Ishani Ranasinghe
If you are a dance enthusiast, this is one show not to be missed. As for those of you who are not, this show will make you just love it. This December, Christmas will come to you a tad bit early. You will be a part of a magical evening that gives you the essence of Christmas when Kanthi Ranchigoda’s Dance Works Centre presents to you, “The Spirit of Christmas” followed by “A Christmas Fantasy.”

Not wanting to give too much away Kanthi Ranchigoda met us to give an insight into her latest production. “I want them to come and see it for themselves,” she said with a smile adding that everyone is quite excited about the show. Usually doing a production once in two years this will be the first time Ms. Ranchigoda will be taking on a Christmas production. “We have been working hard for the past eleven months for this,” she added saying that her students seem to be having a wonderful time getting ready for their performances.

It will be an evening of free movement, jazz, ballet and modern dancing. The free style sequences will be a significant difference. The whole production performed in dance form will be an array of tap dancing, rolls, cartwheels, scissor jumps and many more. All of which will create an atmosphere of energy and liveliness that will be hard not to be awed. As Ms. Ranchigoda put it all this will be complimented with vibrant costumes and well thought out lighting.

As the curtains open and the stage comes alive the first half of the production will bring to you, “The Spirit of Christmas.” During this segment you will see the students presenting dances depicting the themes of Christmas. “It will be the hours before Christmas, finishing off with the Nativity of Christ,” added Ms. Ranchigoda.

Then comes the second half of the production, “A Christmas Fantasy” which will be a treat to watch. You will be transported into a world of fantasy. Santa Claus comes to life and the dancers will be dressed as snowballs, candy stripes, stockings, reindeer, elves and many more Christmas characters. They will all do their turns and flutter to the lively music of Christmas.

Speaking of the music that is to be played, it will also be an evening of all those much-loved Christmas tunes with a touch of other kinds of music as well. All of which will make this one show you would definitely want to go see. In a production that brings about the spirit of Christmas, Ms.Ranchigoda explained that the reason she mixed other types of music was because, “I didn’t want it to be just Christmassy.”

So early this Christmas season head to the Lionel Wendt Theatre on December 4, 5 and 8 as the Dance Works Centre brings to you “The spirit of Christmas” followed by “A Christmas Fantasy.” The media sponsor for this production is MTV. Tickets are available at the Lionel Wendt.
