Kandy undergrads take title at the inter University Games
Peradeniya University retained the overall championship at the 8th Sri Lanka University games concluded last weekend. Peradeniya finished with a total of 226 points as opposed to Colombo University's 190.

The men's section was won by Moratuwa University who totalled 133 points while Peradeniya finished a close second on 128. The Peradeniya ladies had things their own way beating Colombo by 98 points to 78 in the women's section.

Gold medal-wise, Peradeniya had only seven while Colombo had nine and Moratuwa six. The latter were let down by their ladies who produced only 2 Silvers and a Bronze.

A Peradeniya-Colombo tussle was expected in the cricket tournament. However Peradeniya, who fielded a depleted side on account of exams, was beaten by Colombo in the semis. The latter were in turn upstaged by the dark horses (Jaffna University) in the final. Jaffna thus broke the Peradeniya-Colombo dominance in this event. The Northerns also beat Colombo University at soccer. For these sterling efforts, Jaffna were awarded the Trophy for the most outstanding University.

A slightly jarring note was introduced to the proceedings when Jaffna University, who were favoured to win at Hockey, lost and then turned their guns on the umpires alleging partiality. They had also petitioned the Hockey authorities and the Ministry of Sport.

Kelaniya University dominated the Athletic events, winning both the men's and women's sections and also the relays. Their top athlete Caldera triumphed in the blue-ribbon event, the 100 metres (in 10.8 seconds) as well as in the 200. For good measure, he anchored the relay team. So, Kelaniya's national poolist really delivered the goods!

The Table Tennis teams were studded with a few national level players. Moratuwa, who were on the brink of beating Colombo in the semis, had the rug pulled from under their feet by the latter for whom Manura Fernando excelled.

Another Fernando, Kasun, helped Peradeniya Pip Colombo in the dying seconds of their basket ball semi final. However, Kasun could not quite repeat his heroics in the final and the outcome was that Moratuwa won.

Colombo University played host to the 2004 Sri Lanka University games. It is Kelaniya University's turn to play host in 2007, and accordingly the University games play was handed over to the Kelaniya University authorities. (AK)
