Shine like a Super Star
Billed as the event of the year, YES FM Radio Super Star reaches its final stage tonight! Ishani Ranasinghe talks to the five who made it
They have survived weeks of voting, comments by the judges (the good, the bad, the sarcastic) and have been chosen as the final five who will get up on stage today at the final of YES FM Radio Super Star.

As they prepare to wow the crowd and the listeners, we met up for a quick chat with the lucky five who got through the preliminary rounds – Shaza Wickramaratne, Druvi de Silva, Roshie Wickramaratne, Brandon Ingram and Janaka Vithanage. It has finally come down to the five of them and one of them will walk away as the YES FM Radio Super Star along with an amazing array of prizes!

Surprised to be here? “Yes, very much,” says Druvi de Silva explaining that considering the judges’ comments he thought he would be left out in the cold. He also adds that he is thankful for those who believed in him and have heard him sing before as well. Speaking about himself he says music is his passion and after a bit of thought adds, “I love life as well.” Having taken part in other talent shows like the Showboat Karaoke Championship, for Druvi the experience of taking part in YES FM Radio Super Star has been very intriguing. “I am in this for the heck of it,” he says adding that he is not really sure why he’s doing this.

Agreeing that the experience has been really great Janaka Vithanage adds, “It has also been a lot of fun from the beginning.” Having heard about the competition two months back he decided to register and try his luck. “I have been singing for about ten years now,” says Janaka, reminiscing about how he started off with learning to play the guitar. Glad to be one of the five finalists he says he has really practiced in preparation for the big night.

Honestly speaking though, are they really surprised to be here or are they saying it just to sound modest? “Actually in a way I am surprised and in a way I am not,” says Roshie Wickramaratne, explaining that a lot of people did have confidence in her. Having got involved in the competition after she was encouraged by a friend, she was shocked when she got through the auditions stage of it. “There were so many of us and I am very privileged to be here,” she smiles.

Most of them seem to have needed encouragement from their friends and families to get into YES FM Radio Super Star. “My best friend got me into this with the help of my sister who called up and registered for me,” says Shaza Wickramaratne adding that the experience has been really good. Everyone has been just amazing, she says. “We may be very different from each other but we all share one thing in common.” According to her whenever they’re together they’re always singing.

They certainly seem to get along quite well – joking and teasing each other like old friends. They are all quite different, and that’s what makes them one great bunch of people. Adding some colour to the group is Brandon Ingram who has, to put it in his own words, “this attitude which allows me to try everything once!” Singing has been in his family, but he adds, “This is not my passion; writing is,” which is why he has chosen that as a profession.

So how did he end up here? “My friends wanted me to register and I usually register for all the YES FM things, so…” he trails off laughing about the fact that at first he had no idea he had to sing. Agreeing with the rest Brandon says the experience has been excellent but at the same time he is a bit sad the others are not around. “We did become quite close.”

As they say, first there were… well quite a lot actually. Then there were five. Tonight one of them will become the YES FM Radio Super Star as they sing to you at the Colombo Plaza. Remember you will be the judge. Your opinion is what counts… So get ready to vote.
