The Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT-Lanka), is now based at the APIIT City Campus, 388, Union Place, Colombo 02, with expanded student facilities.

APIIT is now fully-fledged with the latest additions of IT labs, libraries with up-to-date journals, books and e-libraries and syndicate rooms for group discussions and meetings. “Now we have facilities comparable to those in APIIT Malaysia,” says Dr. Damith Mudugamuwa, the head of academic programmes.

The Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT-Lanka) has over 300 students at the moment. They have produced over 50 graduates of which many are employed in leading organisations.

The panel of lecturers comprises graduates of recognised universities in Sri Lanka and abroad. In addition to the permanent staff there is also a set of visiting lectures from the industry. “Student and staff interaction is high due to the constant counselling, guidance and mentoring provided,” says Dr. Mudugamuwa.

The Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology, which is approved by the BOI Sri Lanka, offers three-year degrees from the University of Staffordshire; B.Sc. (Hon) in Computing and B.Sc. (Hon) in Business Information Technology and B.A. (Hon) in Business Admiration.

Once a student has completed the first year, he/she is awarded an APIIT diploma. He/she can then opt to take up the degree course or head for employment. Students who complete the degree programme in Sri Lanka are awarded a British Degree by the Staffordshire University. After completing the first or second year in Sri Lanka, full credit transfers to Staffordshire University or any other affiliated university in the UK or Australia, is possible.

There are 12 affiliated universities in the UK including the University of Derby, Metropolitan University, Middlesex University and University of East London. Some of the universities in Australia are Monash University, University of Tasmania and the Queensland University of Technology.

APIIT-Lanka is also a partner of APIIT Malaysia, based in Kuala Lumpur since 1993, successfully, franchising its operations in Panipat, Lahore, Karachi, Perth and Colombo. “We have always been conscious of the affordability of our programmes to local students and have been successful in combining excellence with affordability,” assures Corporate Services Manager Ms. Menaka Galgamuwa.

“There is a high demand for higher education in Sri Lanka, which is poorly met by the government,” says the CEO, APIIT, Dr. Athula Pitigala-Arachchi, adding that there is little opportunity for those who fail to get into a state university. He says that APIIT Lanka was started with the idea of catering to the needs of those who are aspiring towards a rewarding career in the field of IT.

“Our aim is to be a leading higher education institute in the Asia Pacific region with a global recognition of academic excellence,” says Dr. Pitigala-Arachchi explaining that their goal is to prepare students to be true professionals. He also spoke of plans for the introduction of other degree and post-graduate programmes, including training programmes for the corporate section.
