Historic bridge vandalised
By Athula Bandara in Anuradhapura
A block of an Anurdhapura-era rock-stone bridge at Mahakanadarawa in Mihintale has gone missing. Ven. Maha Kelegama Rathanawanse Thera of the Mahakanadarawa Thapowanaya temple said he believed the rock-stone block of the bridge had been removed by vandals or thieves two weeks ago.

The 80-foot long and eight-foot wide bridge was discovered by the monk and Mahakandarawa villagers in 1990 and vested in the Archaeology Department. Ven. Rathanawanse Thera appealed to the authorities to take immediate action to trace the missing block.

Mahinda Weerakkodi, Archaeology Department's Assistant Director in charge of Anuradhapura, said the matter had not been brought to his notice but added the department would take necessary action.
