‘Aaratie’ deals with social taboos
“Aratie”, a 28 episode mini play is being telecast every Wednesday at 7.00 pm on Swarnavahini channel. The story is about social norms which look outdated today. Asanka is a young girl of 25, and lives with her mother and an unmarried aunt. She was molested by a relative at the age of 10. The mother and the aunt are highly worried about Asanka’s future and a marriage proposal is placed in the newspaper for a bridegroom. They tell the truth in the advertisement.

Mahasen, Dilhara, Anura and Athula are bachelors and friends and live in the same hostel. Seeing the marriage proposal they visit the house on a Sunday to see the bride. Though it was only for fun Dilhara falls in love with Asanka and marries her hiding the truth from his mother.

Dilhara’s mother, a traditional village woman refuses to accept Asanka as her daughter-in-law as she was not a virgin. She even tries to set fire to herself and her two daughters. Dilhara has no alternative but to leave Asanka and go abroad, Asanka’s mother dies of a heart attack.

Asanka gets pregnant due to the short-lived marriage with Dilhara. Mahasen who is generally kind hearted goes out of the way to help Asanka and his girl friend Maithri becomes suspicious of the relationship. This leads to a break up of the friendship. Asanka gives birth to a baby girl and takes up residence in the village with her aunt.

After sometime the aunt falls sick and hospitalised. Asanka now living alone seeks Mahasen’s help and in the meantime Asanka’s aunt too dies. Amidst all these happenings Mahasen decides to marry Asanka.

Eighteen years later Mahasen and Asanka find themselves rich and involved in many businesses. They have a son other than the daughter Sandini. Sandini has a boy friend and the boy’s father is against the marriage saying Mahasen is not Sandini’s father.

Dilhara returns from abroad and wants Sanduni back as he has no children. Mahasen tells Dilhara that if Asanka was not acceptable at that time, how could Sanduni be his daughter. Sanduni too refuses to accept Dilhara as her father.

The stellar cast are Semini lddamalgoda, Pradeep Senanayaka, Nirosha Herath, Prasanjith Abeysooriya, Budhika Jayarathna, Cyril Darmawardana, Manjula Kumari, Miurie Samarasingha and Nilanthi Heendeniya, Rebeka Nirmali, Dilani Nikahetiya and Nethali Nanayakara.
