  • King Valagamba
    King Lajji-Tissa reconciled with the priests and began to follow Buddhist principles. The doors of the palace were open to the priests. Alms were offered to them. The king started renovating the Buddhist shrines. He leveled the area between Ruwanveli Chetiya and Thuparamaya.
  • Tradition continues: Moonstones in Polonnaruwa
    The high quality of Sinhalese architecture and sculpture continued when Polonnaruwa became the capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura. In fact, some of the religious monuments were more impressive than those in Anuradhapura.

    My parents suggested that it would be a good idea for the four of us to observe the eight precepts on Vesak full moon day. But we had other plans. I wanted to make a ‘star’ lantern. Kamani wanted to make an octagonal one.
  • Vesak – the thrice blessed day
    Vesak commemorates the Birth, Enlightenment and the Passing away of the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Every year, Vesak is celebrated on the full moon Poya day in the month of May. This year Vesak Pura Pasalikvaka Poya falls on Tuesday, 4 May.
