CBK regrets not choosing legal profession
President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the Chief Guest at the 30th Annual convocation of the Bar Association yesterday entreated members of the Judiciary to eradicate corruption from the legal system. She urged them to remove Sri Lanka from being ranked as a country where the Police and the Judiciary were seen by international organisation assessments as two of the most corrupt systems.

"As a Head of State and most importantly as a citizen I strongly believe in a strong and independent judiciary", President Kumaratunga said adding that she regretted that she had not chosen the legal profession as she had first aspired to, which according to her 'would have saved her from a lot of situations'. Ikram Mohamed, President's Counsel, was inducted by Attorney General K.C. Kamalasabayson, PC as President of the Bar Association for the year 2004 - 2005 at the Convocation attended by Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, PC as Guest of Honour and Power and Energy Minister, Karu Jayasuriya.

Hemantha Warnakularuriya was elected Bar Association Deputy President and Anoma Goonatileke as Secretary. Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva stressed the importance of having adequate Judicial representation in the North-East and brought to notice the 'courts' established in Vavuniya, Trincomalee and Jaffna. Quoting from the Dhammapada on the importance of maintaining social justice, he said he could not have 'faced his litigations' without the support of the Bar.
