The Police Commemoration Day will be held today (March 21) at the Police Field Force headquarters, Havelock Road, Colombo. The 140th commemoration would remember the 2,684 police personnel who have laid down their lives in the performance of their duties since the first death in the line of duty by police constable Sabhan of the then Ceylon Police on March 21, 1884. Sabhan was shot dead at Mawanella by Mamala Marikkar, an accomplice of the notorious criminal Saradiel.

Inspector General of Police, Indra de Silva will take part in the official ceremonies which will be held in front of the commemorative monument at Havelock Road.

"It is with a deep sense of genuine gratitude, reverence, appreciation and love that the Police Service remember and honour their heroes every year. The dedicated lives and the heroic deaths of our comrades will continue to inspire us to serve our country as they did, without counting cost", says a statement issued by the Police Field Force headquarters.

The police personnel attached to the Special Task Force will use the occasion to commemorate the sacrifice made by police personnel who lost their lives in countering terrorism in the North and East.
