Kalu dazzles

Romesh Kaluwitharana continued his good form with a sparkling unbeaten 90 to help Western Province to a respectable 244 all out in their Inter Provincial Tournament game against Southern Province at the P Sara Stadium yesterday.

Kaluwitharana who hit a century last week against Uva Province and followed it up with an unbeaten 90 for Colts in the Premier Limited over game during the week saved Western Province from total disaster.

The wicket keeper batsman hit 13 boundaries in a 120 ball knock and was associated in a face saving 82 run stand for the eighth wicket with Thilina Thushara (33) that took Western Province to a challenging total. Earlier left hander Jehan Mubarak (45) and Pradeep Hewage (31) defied the Southern Province bowlers Tharanga Lakshita(5/59) and Lasith Malinga(2/61) who made inroads with some good medium pace bowling.

Southern Province who were minus skipper Marvan Atapattu, who is indisposed, were struggling at 58 for 4 wickets before Prasanna Jayawardene (25 n.o) and Ravindra Wimalasiri (20 n.o) added 38 runs for the fourth wicket and prevented any further loss.

Left hander Gayan Wijeykoon compiled a fine century and Mahela Jayawardene a fluent 80 as North Central Province hit up 270 for against Uva Province at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium yesterday.
