Mini-battle in SLFP for Colombo post
A political mini-battle within the SLFP will be reaching its climax tomorrow with Mervyn Silva and Chandana Kathriarachchi battling it for the powerful position of Secretary of the SLFP Colombo District Committee.

The battle between the two has intensified into a broader conflict within the SLFP. Mr. Silva who is supporting the SLFP-JVP alliance has gained the support of the pro-JVP group in the SLFP while Mr. Kathriarachchi has secured its rival group.

SLFP internal sources told The Sunday Times that both contestants are canvassing heavily and the odds are even. Mr. Silva is backed by Hanifa Ishaq, Hudson Samarasinghe, Amal Senadilankara, Thilakasiri, Bennet Cooray and Keerthi Udawatte, while Bharata Lakshman Premachandra and Jeevan Kumaratunga spearhead Mr. Kathriarachchi's campaign with a team comprising Nauzer Fowzie, Susil Premjayantha, Kesaralal Gunasekera and Hector Bethmage.

The Sunday Times learns that Mr. Silva will shortly be presenting a case against Mr. Kathriarachchi at the upcoming Central Committee meeting. The comments made by Mr. Kathriarachchi over local media against the SLFP-JVP alliance will be the basis of the case.

A senior SLFP organizer in the Colombo District told The Sunday Times that it would be preferable if an alternative candidate could be installed over both these candidates.
