Adrenalin flowing, tense-looking stu-dents entered the room. A sudden ‘hush’ seemed to fall as they took their seats. Each team appeared eager to win; but then again, who isn’t?

The Edexcel International London Examinations GK Quiz at the BMICH, Committee Room A, on October 31 saw keen competition among schools that enter students for London examinations. A total of 19 schools were in the fray. Each team comprised three members. This was the first time that such an event was organized and conducted by a neutral examination body.

Five schools Asian International (AIS), Elizabeth Moir, Colombo International (CIS), Lyceum and Stafford International qualified for the semi-finals. The atmosphere became even more tense when AIS and Elizabeth Moir found themselves tied at 73 points each qualifying for the finals. Ayaska Fernando, Ashwini Aiyar and Hussain Akberally made up the AIS team while Danny Kang, Charisha Jayawardena and Tamara Wanigasekera represented Elizabeth Moir.

Finally it was AIS all the way. They won the London Examinations GK Genius Quiz Trophy and a book voucher worth Rs.8,000 from Bookland. Runners-up Elizabeth Moir were awarded a voucher from Bookland worth Rs.5,000.

The quiz involved a wide array of questions covering history, geography, literature, music, science, sports and other topics. Certificates were awarded to all participants and the jubilant finalists received the London Examinations GK Genius Quiz Trophy. The quizmaster for this event was Viran Corea. Mrs. Sharon Evans, the wife of the High Commissioner of the UK was the chief guest.
