An orchid for Otara
By Natasha Fernandopulle
Winner of many awards for her business prowess, Otara Chandiram, Managing Director of ODEL Unlimited, had the distinction of having an orchid named after her. Dendrobrium Otara was the hybrid orchid presented to her by the Horticultural and Flora Conservation Society of Sri Lanka at a ceremony held last week at ODEL.

The Royal Horticulture Society of the United Kingdom has certified the new orchid and it has been registered with the International Orchid Hybrid Registration Authority. The registration has been published in the American Orchid bulletin.

This orchid was created by crossing two varieties of hybrid orchids 'Thongchai Gold' and 'Suzanne Neil'. The orchids are cross-pollinated using carefully selected parent plants. The healthy plants emerging from a long hybridisation process (around four years) are then grown to full flowering age. Less than one percent of this crop, with specifically engineered qualities, are finally identified as a perfect breed. Orchid connoisseurs treasure these.

The Dendrobrium Otara orchid was created by W.L.D. Kusumapala of K Orchids (Pvt) Ltd, the largest orchid nursery in Sri Lanka. K Orchids also has the largest and most modern tissue culture laboratory in the country.

This was the fourth orchid to be named after a prominent personality in Sri Lanka. The others were 'Chandrika' after President Chandrika Kumaratunga, 'Ranil' after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and 'Dhanapala Weerasekera' after the President of the Horticultural and Flora Conservation Society of Sri Lanka. These orchids have all been registered internationally.

Vice president of the Horticultural and Flora Conservation Society of Sri Lanka Ms. Marlene Jayawardana came up with the idea of naming an orchid after Ms. Chandiram.
