Rodney reaches a ‘Ridi Tharaka’

‘Ridi Tharaka’ revolves around an actress, who reaches the top in her career but awakens to the realities of life rather late. The miniplay written and directed by Rodney Vidanapathirana is telecast on ITN every Thursday at 7.35 pm. The main roles are played by Amarasiri Kalansuriya, Jayantha Bopearachchi, Nayana Kumari, Ratna Sumathipala, Janaki Weeraratne and Murie Samarasinghe.

Dhammika is a security guard in a company who has come from a remote village. He is boarded in Colombo. His mother and sister, Sarojini live in his village. Sarojini has hopes of becoming a film star. Raman is in love with Sarojini but Sarojini is only interested in becoming an actress. Dhammika’s girl friend is Kumudu. Her father is a rich gem merchant. Due to her father’s addiction to drink the family has become destitute.

As a result Kumudu has to work in a garment factory. She is boarded quite close to Dhammika’s lodging. Kumudu’s parents are urging her to marry. Kumudu wants Dhammika to marry her quickly but Dhammika is reluctant as he has many responsibilities. This is the reason why Kumudu’s parents are against the marriage.

Meanwhile a film unit comes to the village. Sarojini manages to get a minor role in the film with the help of an actor. She gives up Raman. Her behaviour makes the village despise her. Kumudu marries a businessman at the insistence of her parents. Sarojini has a successful career as an actress.

There are many rumours about her life style in the media. Sarojini realises that no one really cares for her and that her fans only seeks her out because of her popularity.

Kumudu’s husband goes abroad and she hears many rumours about him and decides to live with Dhammika as she thinks her legal marriage is only a piece of paper. Kumudu comes to the village. But she realises that she is not accepted and finds difficult to fit in to the lifestyle. What will happen to Kumudu? Will she find love and happiness in her life?
