The
flag flies whatever SLMM says
The Scandinavian monitors have declared that the flying of the LTTE
flag in government controlled areas is a provocative act and a violation
of the ceasefire agreement, a spokesperson said.
The spokesperson
was referring to Thursday’s incident where the LTTE hoisted
its flag at a women's conference in Vavuniya town and refused to
obey instructions by the monitoring mission representative to bring
it down.
The LTTE representatives
attending the meeting argued that hoisting the LTTE flag was not
a violation of the ceasefire agreement and that the use of its flag
in government controlled areas could not be objected to as they
are already carrying out political activities in these areas.
But, the SLMM
spokesperson said the act was a violation of the ceasefire agreement
and the monitors had sent an official to the area. She said the
army also had complained to the SLMM that the flying of the LTTE
flag was disturbing the peace in the area.
She said that
they had received similar complaints from other areas in the north
and the east. An SLMM female representative who went to the spot
where the LTTE flag was hoisted was forced to leave the premises
after the participants including the LTTE members jeered at her. |
