HSBC helps university grads to be employable

By Quintus Perera

Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd has teamed up with AIESEC an international, voluntary university student-based organization to break through the myth that graduates are unemployable by launching an innovative project, "Employable You", last week at the Colombo University ICT Auditorium.

This is an exclusive programme of intensive training for the University of Colombo, Management and Finance Faculty second-year undergraduates.

During the three-year undergraduate career, students in the university would be provided with training based on a series of workshops, interactive lectures and seminars focused on developing the potential within the student and equip him with the hard and soft skills necessary to succeed in the competitive world.

It contains self-awareness and goal setting, personality development, case studies, job shadows, mock interviews, communication and presentation skills, time management, visits to the bank as well as opportunities to experience real-life business environments.

Mark Humble, CEO, HSBC Sri Lanka handed over a token memorandum embodying HSBC's commitment to participate in the project to the Colombo University Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Ms.S. Rasanayagam .

The document has been signed by Humble and Damitha Samarakoon, President, AIESEC, Sri Lanka.

The main focus of this project is to address the current problem of graduate unemployment in Sri Lanka by providing a forum for the undergraduates to gain confidence and skills needed to face the challenges and giving them the opportunity for self-development and empowering them with leadership skills. This programme and other such projects demonstrate HSBC's Corporate Social Responsibility and its belief that helping people is to help themselves

HSBC together with AIESEC would be launching another project in September this year to provide children from less privileged schools in the outskirts of Colombo with English speaking skills.
