Scrabble stars picked

Lakshan Wanniarachchi, Sivenasen Saeyorn and Shirley de Silva were selected by the Sri Lanka Scrabble League to represent Sri Lanka in the World Scrabble competition scheduled to be held in Malaysia on October 4. Two days of scrabbling by fifteen participants from Sri Lanka and eighteen from the Gulf States. India Pakistan and Malaysia who were qualified for this year's tournament scrabbled for supremacy at the first International Scrabble Competition held at the Grand Oriental Hotel (G.O.H.). Ms. Simi Munasinghe, the Chief Guest graced the awards ceremony. Prior to the commencement of the prize distribution, players from U.A.E., India, Pakistan and Malaysia, praised the Sri Lanka Scrabble League for the fine arrangements, and the excellent manner in which the tournament was conducted.

The foreigners were very keen on holding a regional tournament in Sri Lanka by the Sri Lanka Scrabble League and assured their participation. Dr. Rupa Wickremaratne, President of the SLSL said that they are hoping to introduce the game to schools island-wide.
