60-year-old man was the guardian devil

A 60-year-old man from Ragama has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl who had been in his care for more than a year, National Child Protection Authority officials said.

The arrest followed after the girl, unable to resist the daily sexual torture by the suspect, told her tragic tale to her school vice principal., who in turn lodged a complaint at the Ja-ela police.

According to investigations conducted by the NCPA, the girl along with her brother had been left in the care of the suspect by her father after he chased away his wife over an illicit affair. The suspect sent the boy back to his father after he was caught stealing money. After this incident, the father stopped visiting the girl.

The suspect sent the girl to a school and she helped him in the running of a small boutique.

One midnight in February last year, the suspect had gagged the girl and raped her. Still in her early teens and having not attained age, the girl had been oblivious to understand the gravity of the incident. Thereafter, she had been subject to such sexual abuse on a daily basis, the officials said.

The suspect was produced before Colombo's Magistrate A.A.R. Heiyanthuduwa and remanded till August 22.
