‘Kadathira’ deals with lay, monastic life
By Susitha R. Fernando
‘Kadathira’ - (The Veil) is a story of human attachment that feeds on the five senses; sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. Dharmasiri, is a Samanera, (young monk). His purpose of becoming a monk was not due to any enlightenment but due to his horoscope not favouring him for lay life.

Notwithstanding his mother Wimalawathi’s objection he is admitted for training. Dharmasiri grows up in an environment where he does not receive a mother’s love or the love of siblings, Sumithra and Thilakasiri.

Meanwhile Thilakasiri, 36-year-old DRO is proposed to the Ralahami’s 18-year-old daughter Nilanka. Ralahamy is an autocrat who believes in forcing his views on everybody. And so the reluctant Nilanka has to marry Thilakasiri in spite of a vast age gap.

Dharmasiri feels frustrated with temple life and longs for affection. Nilanka meets Dharmasiri at this time. She confides in him her distaste of the marriage.
Dharmasiri gives up robes to enter lay life with Nilanka. But Nilanka refuses to have anything to do with him.

He goes home seeking reassurance from his family. His father a strong believer in astrology refuses to accept him into the fold fearing bad times. When Nilanka sees the ill treatment she starts an affair with Dharmasiri out of sympathy.

Dharmasiri realises the impermanence of family affection and takes leave of his mother who is the only one who shows some affection to him. His other objective is to marry Nilanka after finding a suitable job. This is not an easy task as he is not skilled in any way.

Due to a twist of fate Nilanka marries Thilakasiri which in the end becomes a flop. Finally Dharmasiri and Nilanka get married. Once more a problem arises where Francis, a businessman is attracted to Nilanka.
