The Super Golden Chimes Re-Union Concert
It’s sure to be much more than chimes when the original band members of the famous local pop group of the 70’s - The Super Golden Chimes - re-group after 25 years, for a truly unique once-in-a-life-time, live on stage performance at the BMICH on August 2 at 6.45 pm.

The concert is unique as the band members will pay tribute to the leader of the Super Golden Chimes and Sinhala pop legend, the late Clarence Wijewardena on his 60th birth anniversary, which falls on August 3.

In tribute and in memory of Clarence, his voice will be backed on stage. “The Super Golden Chimes will provide the musical backing and harmony to his voice live on stage with visual impact through high-end graphics and illusions,” said Annesley Malawana, one of the founder members of the group.

All surviving members will be on stage on this memorable day. In fact most of the members are scattered all over the globe and it was almost impossible for them to unite on the given date due to their commitments. I have been communicating with them for almost 3 years in an effort to get them on stage together, which is now going to become a reality on 2nd August.

Five of the band members are domiciled overseas. They are Dixon Gunaratne and Nimal Perera in Switzerland, Rukshan Perera in USA, Condrad Gunaratne in Germany and Nimal Punchihewa in Australia. They will be specially flown for the show through the kind courtesy of SriLankan Airlines and Speedmark Transportation.

It all started this way, said Annesly: “About 6 months before Clarence’s death he called me and said that we should get together once again, round-up the boys and have a mega re-union concert. He entrusted the task of organizing the show to me and he said that he will arrange the music for the show. Due to his sudden demise, the concert did not materialise.

However, I was determined to fulfil his last wish in music by making the re-union concert a reality”. Clarence formed the Super Golden Chimes in the early 70’s with Annesley, Dixon, Sri Kantha and Rohan.

Rohan left the group within 6 months and Condrad and Paul joined afterwards. Subsequently there were changes in the Base Guitar, Drums and Key Board positions. They were Rukshan Perera, Sunil Malawana, Nimal Perera, Cumar Peiries, Chandral Fonseka, Nimal Punchihewa, Liyasing de Silva, Peter Almeida and Suriya Kumar, to name a few.

The band was managed by Nelu Fernando of Nelu’s Advertising, who was a tower of strength to Super Golden Chimes. Nelu provided Super Golden Chimes with sound and a recording studio for recordings and practices.

There are a lot of interesting things lined up for the re union concert and most of all, you can re-live the Golden Era of Sinhala pop of the 70’s once again when we sing both Sinhala and English songs with beautiful melodies and harmony, said Annesley. The MC for the evening will be Dr. Vijaya Corea.
