Army CR pick for next week
Rugby football without doubt one of the most popular sports in the country will be continuing for the ninth week in ('A' league tournament) - (June 20 to 22).
Five matches are on the cards. The Army (who were placed third in the league last year) will lock horns with runners-up CR and FC at Galle Face on Sat. (June 21). This match should be closely contested and provide the sparks and fire.

On the same day Havelocks SC are the guests of CH and FC - Maitland Crescent.
On Friday - Kurunegala RFC play host to Air Force SC at Kurunegala.
There are two maches on Sunday - Kandy SC vs Police SC at Nittawela (June 22), while OZSC - play Navy SC at Welisara. -BW

CR hold edge over Police
By Shamseer Jaleel
With both CR and Police losing their matches last weekend, they will be out to regain some lost prestige when they clash today at Longden Place. The Red Shirts went down to the CH 14-22 and Police after holding the Soldiers to 3-7 at lemons, went down 3-29.

CR&FC whilst scoring 358 points in their six encounters have given away 62 points and are in fourth position in the Points Table. Meanwhile Police have collected 218 points giving away 80 and are in sixth position.

CR who were outclassed by the CH last weekend have to correct their basics if they are to beat the Police. Not only the Red Shirts three-quarters ball handling was at a low ebb, where they spoiled at least to scoring opportunities, but also they had a major problem in converting three easy penalties within kicking range.

Police led by Sampath Galewela have showed a lot of promise this season with their forwards and three-quarters dishing out some excellent rugby. A lot will depend on players like Nilusha, Hossen, Muthumala and Galewala to deliver the goods if the Police are to beat CR. Meanwhile the CR led by Shamly Nawaz will expect Asanga Rodrigo, Haren Kaluarachchi, Kishan Musafer and Mohammed Mushtaq to give off outstanding performances. According to the two teams performances this season, it should be a closely fought out game with CR having a slight edge over Police.

Gauder to interview Baron De Livera
Baron De Livera, President Windsurfing Association of Sri Lanka will be interviewed live at 5.30 P.M. on Wednesday (June 18) by Kevin Gauder of the Commercial Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation on the Mid-Summer Windsurfing Championships to be held on July 6 in Dambula.

The Association is at the forefront of a drive aimed at harnessing local talent in watersports from the provinces under a scheme sponsored by the Ministry of Central Regional Development at Tourism.

Havies host Army today
Havelocks S.C. take on the Sri Lanka Army at Havelock Park today (Sunday15) while Police S.C. are the guests of CR and FC at Longden Place on the same day.
Both matches should be keenly contested. Army, who are unbeaten has been performing reasonably well todate. Last week they defeated Police SC by a handsome margin.

Havies stretched Kandy SC even leading the visitors at the break. In the end lost to KSC 26-13 at the Park due to their poor defence and presenting their opponents two gift tries. Both teams are fielding foreigners. They should perform better in today's game with a better game plan.

Though beaten by CH and FC, CR and FC should make amends against the Police, but the law enforcing officers are no pushover side. With better discipline on the field the blue shirts should fare well in this game. In their match against Army two Police players were shown the yellow and red card for rough house tactics. -BW

What ails Thomian rugby?
All is not well with S. Thomas' Mt. Lavinia rugby! The school had the tradition of producing some of the best willow wielders for the country.

They also made a name in rugby, producing some outstanding players for the country such as Michael Jayasekera, Kolitha Gunatilleke, the Samarasinghe brothers, Nihal 'Baila' Rajpal, P.L. Munasinghe, Chaminda Rupasinghe just to name a few.

The school has a rugby development committee headed by Arjun Dharmadasa. Recently they organised a mini-rugby carnival for the juveniles, which proved to be a success.

Apparently in the ongoing season things are not going all that well with Thomian rugby. After their defeat at the hands of Ananda in a cliff-hanger 8-7, the coach Iftikhar resigned for reasons best known to him. Stefhan da Silva, who is here on a holiday from Australia is assisting the team. He is an Old Boy of the school and naturally has the best interest of the team at heart, Will he be able to continue with the training is a question asked by supporters of Thomian rugby?

A coach should be contracted for a period of time to develop the skills at embryo stage. He can't be expected to perform miracles overnight. The coach should be allowed to handle without let or hindrance. Before appointing a coach the powers that be must look into his ability to impart the skills on and off the field and should have confidence in him.-BW
