Bond is Back in Die Another Day
By Harinda Vidanage
The latest movie of the James Bond series in now released under the banner Die Another Day and returns Pierce Brosnan to screen as his fourth appearance of the British Spy 007. The Movie is one of the most expensive Bond projects ever and is filled with mind blowing special effects and action sequences.

The New Zealand born film director Lee Tamahori who took Hollywood by storm in his epic Once Were Warriors has done a good job with his new outing as the Bond director. The movie as many critics see is Sexy, funny and spectacular, Bond's first mission of the new millennium is one of the best of the series - not simply a great Bond movie, but a great Action movie.

The story line takes Bond from North Korea, Hong Kong, Cuba, to Iceland. It is a Bond who is touring the globe and this time the speciality is, it is more than the mission for Her Majesty's government Bond is also fighting an enemy who has succeeded in damaging his pride and reputation.

The movie opens up with a spectacular Hovercraft chase through a deadly minefield in the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea. But as a result of this he is captured by the North Koreans and while Madonna performs her song for the movie titles the viewers are shown some gruelling torture inflicted on Bond and the movie opens up proper depicting 14 month stay in prison for Bond.

Finally he realizes that he his freedom came at the expense of the same person he came to takeout in the Korean mission and he takes it as a personal initiative to takeout the perpetrator a young Korean renegade army colonel Zao played by Rick Yune

Bonds mission is tough because he realizes that there is some one working within his organization leading to his betrayal in the Korean mission and which can be repeated. The Hunt for Zao takes him to Cuba where Bond as well as the viewers are introduced to the all new Bond Girl Jinx played by the Oscar winning Halle Berry.

Both Bond and Jinx are on the hunt for Zao and Cuba is the point where he realizes the technology of alteration of facial features and what bigger business Zao is involved in and the diamonds he acquire from a brief encounter with Zao leads him to a multi millionaire who has made a reputation because of his dare devil feats and technological mania, Gustav Graves played by Tobby Stephens.
Another great scene is the sword fight between Bond and Gustav in which Madonna plays a Cameo role as a fencing instructor. Gustav invites Bond to his Ice palace in Iceland and where we get the first view of the pride of Bond, his new wheels the all new Aston Martin V12 Vanquish.

Bond is partnered by the new addition to his organization Miranda Frost played by Rosamund Pike. But Jinx is also in close pursuit of Bond. What they find in the Palace is that Gustave has acquired a super weapon some what similar to the Golden Eye weapon stationed in space but can attack any object in the ground with a devastating strike. The melting of the Ice Palace is a classic example for this.

Bond finally uncovers the traitor as his new partner and with jinx fight Gustave who he realizes is the real Zao who has altered his facial features and makes a timely stop to global war eruption in the 37th parallel separating North and South Korea.

We see a car duel after a long time in this movie which is much enjoyable seeing than reading but the new feature of adaptive camouflage which makes the Bond Aston Martin car invisible is a great addition and needs a mentioning.
Thus all these plus bit of British pride in filmmaking and a political message of showing they have better Agents than their US counter parts Bond rescuing Jinx the US agent adds up to this and a great finish makes this movie one of the best action movies of the year.
