We write in response to the letter sent by the ASS (Association of Shakespeare Stalwarts), which was published in your esteemed newspaper last week.

We are dismayed by the contents of your letter and wish to assure the members of the ASS that our intentions are entirely honourable (most of the time). As we did in 2001, we have started extensive practice sessions in order to render into reality "the Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr".

We would like to clarify certain points raised in your letter:

1. Juliet is portrayed by a man - We do admit this is a tragic flaw on our part. However, it is not intent but circumstance, which forces us to have this portrayal. We have done extensive research on this matter and now know for certain that during Mr. Shakespeare's time, the character of Juliet was indeed played by a certain lady named Mrs. Mildew whose buxom figure belied her age of 56 and who was also the owner of a delightful drinking hole called the Eagle and the Cherub just a few paces away from the Globe Theatre. We indeed had two options for this character and while Anuruddha closely resembled Mrs. Mildew's (considerable) size, we had to give the role to Adam since he alone was able to bring out the lilting tones of Juliet's voice and subtle changes in her character. Having seen Adam at rehearsals, we wish to assure the ASS that he indeed does more than justice to the character of Juliet.

2. Mark Antony and Caesar's credit cards: We would like to point out to the members of ASS that the credit card statements which they have in their possession were actually from a supplementary card of Caesar's which was with Mrs. Caesar. Having participated in a drunken orgy the night before the Ides of March, Antony in fact was suffering from a) a terrible hangover b) an enormous bar - bill for the drinks consumed by his friends. History goes to show that Antony was on his way to the senate to meet Caesar in order to borrow money to pay his debt when the assassination happened, and the rest is (as the saying goes) history....

3. The staging of Othello - We must admit that the ASS may have got a point there. There is no record to show that Othello referred to his wife as Desi. In fact the correct nickname is Mona as rightly pointed out by ASS. We have also found out that the historical Othello's first name was Les, hence the expression 'Les is Moor'.

Before we sign off, an appeal to the public, please please do come and see this play. It's very funny and quite cool and we promise you that you will have the time of your life!!! (That means a really great time!)

Signed

Feroze, Anuruddha & Adam
