Shani Deraniyagala is a beautiful girl whose parents died when she was young. She had been brought up under the protection of her elder brother, a rich landowner.

In the spring of her life, Shani develops a talent towards music and singing during her student days at the Convent. Her brother, discovering her talent, presents her with a violin. But the over-protective brother does not allow her to attend formal classes. Instead, a middle-aged music teacher called Kasun teaches her music in the protection of her home. Shani is not even allowed to leave home without a middle-aged maid accompanying her for her safety. This has become a great problem for Shani, since she does not have the freedom to do anything without the consent of her brother. She develops a friendship with a male friend of the same social status called 'Shehan' during school hours.

Kasun, who is unmarried, is a man of firm decisions. While pursuing his career as a teacher, he is also following an external degree course in music at the University. Kasun teaches music in remote schools and stays with his friends in a rented room when he comes to the city. His economic status is at a bare minimum.

Shani studies hard under Kasun. One day, on meeting Kasun in the streets, Shani talks to him. Shani's brother who comes to know of this meeting expresses his strong disapproval on the grounds that the two are having an affair. He immediately dismisses Shani's maid and launches a mob attack on Kasun, who gets wounded in the encounter and Shani's music class comes to an abrupt halt. This assault receives publicity in all the major newspapers as an attack on a University student by a hired mob.

Shani comes to know of the attack on Kasun and goes secretly to meet him. She later elopes with him to a remote place in Polonnaruwa and lives a life full of hardships. Shani's brother failing to find the sister leaves the country in despair.

It was too late when Shani found out that her husband was involved in a revolutionary movement. Shani happens to be also pregnant and admonishes her husband to abandon the movement. Kasun does not have the courage to do so.

Shani later comes to know that Kasun had been killed in a confrontation with the Police. She is deeply distressed by this. With the help of some friends Shani leaves for the town to seek help from her friend Dinali.

Dinali welcomes Shani to her house and starts living as she used to in the past. Under the encouragement and guidance of Dinali, Shani resorts to singing. At this time, she gives birth to a baby girl. As soon as Shani enters the professional sphere as a singer, Dinali helps Shani to acquire the new name "Maheshika".

As Maheshika starts her professional career as a singer, she suddenly becomes very popular and as a singer is in great demand.

Meanwhile Maheshika meets her old friend Shehan who lives abroad most of the time. Shehan proposes to Maheshika and despite being under severe mental stress, she agrees to marry him.

But Maheshika suddenly comes across Kasun at a recording studio. She is very perplexed. The next day, Kasun comes to meet Maheshika and explains to her how he didn't die during the revolution and inquires about his daughter. Maheshika, who is infuriated by Kasun, refuses to introduce her daughter to him. She is on the firm footing that all the problems she faced were mainly due to Kasun's strict principles. And Shehan invites Maheshika to America for the wedding. Maheshika agrees and she leaves for the airport with her daughter.

But on her way she becomes nostalgic about Kasun since he was her daughter's father. 'Maheshika's choice between Shehan and Kasun at this crucial moment will be revealed at the end of the 16th episode.
