Sea beauty
Krishani Hewavisenti reveals some of the secrets of the deep
By Esther Williams
To think that seaweed, that slimy marine plant with an unpleasant fishy odour has properties that would actually benefit your skin seems unbelievable. Nevertheless, a certain variety - the algae - can bring about amazing results, according to Krishani Hewavisenti who specialises in unique facials using sea products.

Relaxing on her couch, listening to soft oriental music, the initial cleansing was quite relaxing. The seaweed mask however, had a rather strong smell of fish. Ignore that and you can smell the sea and enjoy the refreshing experience. Soon after application, your skin seems to respond - it tingles and tightens resulting in soft, smooth skin.

The seaweed used for the mask is called Micronized Marine Algae (MMA) and is from the sea off the Brittany Coast. It is in powdered form as it has been dehydrated and broken up through a process called Micro Explosion.

The natural fishy smell, however, is not removed as the ingredient that smells is vital for the treatment. Therefore, it seems imperative that one tolerates the smell during the short duration of the facial as it does not linger after the removal of the mask.

Developed by Thalgo Cosmetics, MMA which consists of three red and brown cold water sea plants is a kind of fungus that is 400-500per cent more potent than traditional ground seaweed. The marine nutrients within have a therapeutic effect and are absorbed through the skin by the process of Osmosis.

Thalgo was the first company to discover that algae could be used in skin care treatments. Their claim is, "We go to the lowest place on earth, to bring you the highest standard of natural skincare treatments."

Explaining her 'Principle of the Sea' Krishani says, "Human beings have a close affinity with the sea and the sea contains nutrients that are good for you. That's why doctors recommend seafood for a healthier lifestyle." This cannot be debated, especially when you reflect on the fact that the earliest life forms evolved from the sea. Research also shows that the sea contains potent minerals which are being used in a variety of medical and cosmetic treatments.

How does it work?
The Micronised Marine Algae Mask contains natural marine elements rich in Amino acids and Vitamins (A, B1, B2, B12, C, D) that besides cleansing, helps stabilise sebaceous secretion that aids in the re-balancing of skin, circulation and combating surface toxins.

Thalgodermyl Mask controls sebum production that causes acne. It deep cleanses the skin by removing impurities, combats infection and helps refine and soothe the skin.

O2 Marine Oxygenating Mask: The Sea O2 in the water by which all sea creatures survive has been captured in this product which is good for cell renewal. It incorporates fruit and marine acids with protein and plant extracts to rehydrate, replenish and soothe the skin. Especially good for those over 40 with dull, sluggish granular complexions, the O2 mask can increase oxygen absorption and thereby help in revitalizing the skin.

Krishani offers almost 12-13 different facials - each for different results. She recommends them as a monthly routine to give your skin a boost and restore that radiant, youthful look. This is needed, she says for working women who are exposed to dust, smoke and other pollutants.

"They would age a lot better, gracefully, if they start these treatments in their early 20's," she asserts, confirming that the products she uses are tried and tested by experts the world over.

All ingredients used in the masks are natural - gelatine verbena, algae, sea O2 and fruit acids, all of which are essential for rejuvenating skin.

In addition, Krishani also offers treatments for inch loss that are made with Dead Sea mud which is known to have healing powers and also slimming teas that break down carbohydrates.

Friendly advice
She looks like the sort of girl who couldn't organise her hair in the morning without a team of helpers at hand.

But Jennifer Aniston is a master planner and has mapped out her future like a military exercise.

Part of the plan now rests on her new movie, The Good Girl, out in November, in which squeaky clean Jen hops into bed with a smouldering hunk little more than half her husband's age.

Even though her sizzling shots with 21-year-old actor Jake Gyllenhaal were all in a day's work, Friends fans will be shocked by the sight of Jen in the first sex scene of her 13-year showbiz career, writhing semi-naked on the big screen.

But hubby Brad Pitt, 38, didn't mind a bit. "He was just like 'Be nice to the guy. He's only a kid!" laughs Jennifer.

The 33-year-old star is looking for projects to release her from the girl-next-door rut and The Good Girl is proving a great start.

Jennifer plays Justine, a depressed shop assistant who seeks relief from a boring marriage to a pot-smoking layabout through a dead-end affair with a colleague.

She's had rave reviews across America, but when she chose the role, Aniston had a harsher critic in mind. "I wanted to prove to myself most of all, that I could try something different," she reveals.

But it may not prove so easy in the long term. Her Friends co-star and real-life pal Courteney Cox calls her "a creature of habit".

In the years since Jennifer first walked onto the Friends set in 1994, much has changed - including £650,000-per-eposide pay cheques for each member of the show's cast.

But Courteney says much remains the same too. Every morning Jennifer calls before work and asks her: "How late are you today?"

And come lunchtime, Jennifer always joins Courteney and Lisa Kudrow in the canteen. "Every single day she eats a salad and she orders it in the exact same way," says Courteney. So why is Jennifer finally ready to leave the lunch line?

Well, she stands to earn £16m from this series of Friends, which is expected to end in the spring of 2003, and has a wonderful marriage with Brad, so she is secure enough to take a few chances. "It's a nice feeling to have somebody that you just like so much," Jennifer says. "I think it's made me much more comfortable with who I am, to have someone who loves me and accepts me with all of my crap, dysfunctions, insecurities and struggles. And he kind of sees it all through those beautiful rose coloured glasses. "I'd like us to have a family, I'd like to travel, I'd like to do it all."

Her friend, singer Melissa Etheridge, can't see any barriers to Jennifer becoming a mum. "Both she and Brad would be incredible parents," Melissa confirms. The Good Girl should give Jennifer the movie-career boost she hopes for. Previous big screen outings - including 1997's Picture Perfect, 1998's The Object Of My Affection and last year's Rock Star - didn't set the screen on fire. But these struggles never killed her determination.

"She's a very hard worker," says Matt Perry. This hard work has taken the form of DIY since she and Brad shelled out £9m for their Beverly Hills mansion a year ago.

"Once we put the walls back together, I'm sure it will be a blast to decorate," she laughs.

It's no surprise that a secure base and cosy home life are important to her. When she was nine, her father, veteran soap actor John Aniston, left her mother, Nancy, for another woman.

Years later she became famously estranged from her mother after Nancy talked about her to a tabloid TV show. So, Jen has created a family of friends. Over the summer she and Brad have spent evenings at the Malibu home of Courteney and her husband David Arquette. Courteney says "We just eat, talk, have glasses of wine and enjoy ourselves."
A couple of times a month Jen leaves Brad at home and meets up with her girlfriends. "I'll call and say it's time to talk because we have a lot of catching up to do, so we get together," says pal Kathy Najaimy.

Often going out with Melissa Etheridge and actress Catherine Keener, they share dinner and chat, just like any normal girls' night out the world over - give or take Jennifer's frequent appearances in the headlines. "We sit around laughing at most of them," says Melissa.

"Both Brad and Jennifer have a drive for success, but it never overshadows their desire for a healthy, happy life. They enjoy their careers, but if it was ever a bar for them, they would drop it."

But that's not on the agenda yet. In August, Jennifer began shooting the comedy Bruce Almighty with Jim Carrey. After that, says Matthew Perry, her options "are boundless. She's worked really hard to put herself in a position to do what she wants."
