Rupavahini back in Jaffna
By Ramesh Uvais
In its search for a perfect tuning to cater to
the country's Tamil speaking audience, state television Rupavahini
couldn't have chosen a better time to resume its transmission to
the North.
With crucial
peace talks in Thailand just days away, Rupavahini has built a significant
'peace' bridge linking the North and South of the country by extending
its coverage to the Jaffna peninsula.
With the transmission
expanded to the North, Rupavahini also intends to increase its two
channels to five soon with concrete moves to establish a National
Tamil Channel, which would exclusively cater to the demands of the
Tamil speaking audience.
In doing so,
Rupavahini would be the first TV station to provide a Tamil Channel
to the entire country including the North.
At Monday's
ceremonial launch held at the station's Studio III to mark the extension
of transmissions to the North, Mass Communication Minister Imtiaz
Bakeer Markar said the move was a definite boost to the country's
peace initiatives by minimising the gaps between the people in the
North and South.
The launch was
significant as it was covered live combining the Colombo news conference
with a similar event in Jaffna, where top Army officers, LTTE leaders
and Religious leaders were present to mark the event.
Rupavahini
Chairman Dhammika Ganganath Dissanayake said though they had provided
coverage to the North in the past, the devastating war brought them
to a complete halt in 1998 after the Elephant Pass debacle.
The new links
have now been made possible by installing three microwave links
at Madukanda, Mannar and the Jaffna Sri Lanka Telecom Towers.
The present
Tamil programmes telecast over its Eye channel would be lined up
with a variety of programmes including a Tamil news bulletin at
7 pm daily.
Many speakers
who participated at the launch welcomed the move as a crucial effort
to quench the thirst of entertainment and information of the people
in the North, who had been starved of such facilities for the past
few years.
With Rupavahini
widening its horizon with the National Tamil Channel hitting the
airwaves soon, it should certainly signal a new era to strike the
right chord with the people in the North.

Run'
With
the hope that it will bring the family closer together,l Glen "Lucky"
Singer (Robert Urich) has planned a vacation with his new wife,
Connie (Patricia Kalember) and his resentful eight-year-old son,
Kevin (Joel Palmer). But when the computer guiding their train malfunctions,
Lucky must risk his life to save more than 200 passengers as the
runaway train hurtles them towards certain death.
Learning that
the engineer has been thrown from the train, Lucky launches a desperate
plan to save the passengers and the hospital the train is racing
toward. Disconnecting the engine from the cars, he plants explosives
and is air-lifted from the engine seconds before it is blown off
