Footwork Dance Show was breathtaking
By Chandani Kirinde
The 8th 'Footwork Dance Sport Championships' concluded last Sunday (April 4) was conducted in the usual glitter and glamour that has come to be associated with this event.

Nafaiz and Tharanga

The show which was scheduled to start at 6.30 p.m. began 20 minutes late which could be considered good by Sri Lankan standards.

There were 19 couples contesting for the awards in nine different categories. The show began with a contestants parade followed by the introduction of the adjudicators.

The judges were all foreigners with two of them being the 2002 UK professional 10 Dance champions Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace. The third was Chong Sheng Zhe from Singapore. The judges also used computerized scrutiny in this task. Compere Arun Dias Bandaranaike kept the crowds entertained during the short breaks between local competition with his humourous anecdotes and at the beginning challenging the audience to keep their cell phones on and see if they can compete with the music.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the performance by Vincent and Flavia who glided across the dance floor with such ease and style with their beautiful performance which drew repeated rounds of loud applause from the audience .

Winner Sujeewa and Nicole with Nafaiz and Tharanga ( first runner-up) and Warren and Audree
(Third Place)

Their performance also highlighted the level to which local competitors have risen to reach international standards.

The main event, the amateur Latin American finals was won by Yohanne Juril and Manuja Siriwardena who won among other gifts two airline tickets to Singapore where they will take part in a dance sport competition in September.

The Nilanthi Wijesooriya Memorial Trophy was won by Ranil Attygalle and Naheeka Ariyapperuma. The trophy was presented by Ms. Wijesooriya's former dance partner Ramzi Rahaman.

Three foreign couples namely Tham Cham Goo and Frances Teoh, Awon Lee and Nancy Chana and N.C. Ang and Navy Teng won in the categories such as beginners modem, freshers modern, novices modern and pre amateur modern.

The other winners included Lashan Gammanpila and Michelle Goonasekera for freshers Latin American, Sujeewa Jayatilleke and Andrea De Silva for novices Latin American and pre-amateur Latin American.

The show passed without any hiccups but there certainly were many eye brows raised by the flash of plenty of flesh with compere Arun wondering out loud he hoped there were several doctors in the audience.
