Galle Rugby Club saved from drowning
Galle Rugby Club, newcomers to the elite league ('A' div.) was developing fast, spreading the rugby gospel among schools at the grassroots level in Ruhuna.

This was made possible, thanks to the personal efforts of the President of the Ruhunu Rugby Union, Kumar Abeywardena, a former stalwart of Havelocks S. C. Last year the Ruhunu Combined Schools did well to beat Royal in the Schools Rugby 7s final organised by S. Thomas'.

This year they entered the big league ('A' div.) and were in dire straits due to lack of funds. According to Abeywardena they were on the verge of pulling down shutters in the second round (Plate) midway.

They had no other option. He said they were fortunate that the DGM Ceylinco Life Mr. R. Renganathan who is a die-hard supporter of sports and an ardent rugby lover performed the rescue act with a sponsorship package.

The Ruhunu RU has got the services of veteran coach, Quentin Israel to coach the team. His immense know how is an asset to the youngsters who are newcomers to the sport.

On Thursday (Aug. 8) a sponsorship letter was handed over to Abeywardena at a simple ceremony in the presence of Israel, Ravi Liyanage (Marketing Manager) and Marlon Fernando.

With fresh blood infused by Ceylinco Life, Ruhunu Rugby is assured of its continuity and will play competitive rugby, said Abeywardena.

For the game to develop there should be more clubs and mass participation. Initially Hemaka Amerasuriya and Udeka Tennakoon helped with men and material to sow the rugby seeds in the S. Province. (B.W.)
