'Nimal & The Equals' expand

Nimal Jayamanne of 'Ranpota' fame is back in the scene with the expanded outfit, he was planning to have for a long time.

'Nimal & The Equals' was formed in February 2001 and moved in straight away to perform at Bentota Beach Hotel.

The Original Line-up consisted of Roshan Dias on keyboards, Trevin Senn on Guitar, Sharmalee de Silva and Nimal himself on vocals. Two months later Trevin took wings to Maldives and Lucian de Andrews joined the band.

In December last year Nimal decided to revamp and expand the band to a bigger outfit and so Willy Dias, formally of X-periments joined to play bass and Lucian's elder brother Royle joined as the drummer. But 'Nimal & The Equals' is now an all-male band

"We had to let Sharmalee do her own thing as she had to shuttle between Sri Lanka and Gemany every four months or so and due to the fact that there is a dearth of good female singers who are willing to come out and join an outfit, we decided to do without one. We do not work at Bentota Beach any more but I have something bigger planned out for the band and we are working hard on that. When the time comes we will spell it out but for the time being you will have to take my word for it", Nimal explained his plans.

"All my members are very experienced. Roshan is the youngest in the band, but he too, has been in the scene and is very reliable both musically and as a colleague.

Willy, Royle and Lucian of course are highly experienced and all four of them are pillars of strength to me. Being experienced doesn't mean that we can create miracles overnight. We have to work hard as a team and build up the understanding amongst each other. But, when you have people who are experienced, willing to help and learn from each other it makes thing easier for the whole team," he said.

"Apart from Ranpota.. and a few of my own songs we keep to the music of the 60s & 70s only. We do play a repertoire of both English and Sinhala songs from that era. We try as much as possible to do songs that most other bands don't handle. We want to bring the 60s & 70s atmosphere back so that while the not so young can re-live those memories the young ones can get a taste of the romantic old times. It is a around this strategy that we are planning our entire programme," he added.

The band is now ready to take the scene with a more positive approach.

'A Friend For Boltan' at RussianCentre

A Friend For Boltan, he Lion a children theatre will be held at Russian Cultural Centre on march 27 at 6.30 p.m. and on March 28 at 10.30 a.m.

The theatre is based on the children's book of the same title by Kalus Kordon and Pieter Kunstreich.

Music and Performance by Erik Schaeffler and Uwe Schade Two tales for the young. These two musical adventure tell about a difficult but not impossible friendship between a lion and a camel.

In the first tale A Friend for Boltan the Lion, the audience meets Boltan the Lion for the first time. Boltan is the king of the animals, who reigns from an oasis in the middle of a vast and burning hot desert. When he comes across a camel half-dead from thirst, he begins to be interested in the camel's stories and store of wisdom and the two become firm friends. However, the jealous desert fox Abdul finds a way to come between the pair. "What a ridiculous lion! A beast of prey - friends with a camel. "That strings the lion's pride and hence, the conflict begins. The second tale Lion in Search of a Lioness focuses on Boltan's great yearning for a wife and family. 'Inert Volcano' too hot inside

By Susitha R. Fernando
Scenes of regular fights were a decisive factor in getting a good market for Sri Lankan films made several decades ago.

Recently this trend, has been changed though in a disturbing manner with Daya Wimalaweera's "Inert Volcano" ('Seethala Gini Kandu') released in the fifth circuit.

The story unravels a battle between the good, represented by young Rohana( Kamal Addararachchi), who works hard to look after his fatherless family which includes the mother and younger sister and the evil, portrayed by 'Sunny' (Jeevan Kumaratunge), the village thug who is responsible for causing a number of painful incidents on certain villagers and who is involved in number of illegal activities in the area.

Rohana has an affair with his cousin sister 'Nadi' (Dihani Ekanayake)whose birth is shrouded in mystery known only by Sunny and the girl's mother (Manik Kurukulasuruya). The secret is that Sunny is the father of this girl. But Sunny lives with 'Rosy' (Dilani Abeywardena), a woman forcibly been taken from a man who failed to settle a debt to Sunny.

Basically the story of 'Seethala Gini Kandu' portrays a struggle between the good and the evil. As similar to any other commercial films here too the good wins defeating or destroying the evil at the end of it.

Playing one of the principal roles Kamal Addararachchi (Rohana) had done justice to his part acting as a young lover, determined youth and a hot-tempered fighter. Jeevan Kumaratunge playing the role of Sunny, the thug and the one who is responsible for all the cause of evil in the village has fulfilled expectation of the audience.

The violence one comes across in 'Seethala Gini Kandu' torments its viewers needlessly and could be the film which carries the most number of disturbing scenes that had ever been made in Sri Lanka.

These scenes raise some questions in the minds of the audience. The director, a man of wide experience has tended to use the camera in a manner that may not bring credit to the industry. Every film maker has to respect the taste of the audience.

'Seethala Gini Kandu' is a film with a good story line but presented in a most disturbing manner.

Lara Croft Raids Colombo

By Sanath Weerasuriya
The Much awaited Movie "Tomb Raider" with Oscar winner Angelina Jolie as modern action heroine Lara Croft has now hit the audiences at Liberty Cinema, Colombo.

Jon Voight, Lain Glen, Noah Taylor, Daniel Craig tar in Tomb Raider with Angelina.

Simon West is the director of this highly computer graphic based movie.

Lara Croft was born into wealth and groomed at the most elite schools. She travels to dangerous and mysterious locales around the globe in search of rare, lost crypts and long forgotten empires. She speaks numerous languages, is highly trained for combat and answers to no one, obeying only a desire for adventure.

But now she must face her greatest challenge yet: to find two halves of an ancient artefact buried in space and time. To possess it means ultimate power for its possessor. But to get there, she must first take on a powerful and dangerous secret society. The fate of mankind rests in the hands of one - Lara Croft, a twenty first century heroine inspired by the most popular interactive video character in history.

From the phenomenally popular interactive Tomb Raider game, springs a new kind of action hero: Lara Croft.

Travelling, taking prize winning photographs, mastering foreign languages and visiting archaeological sites are perfectly apropos for a rich and pampered heiress... and very good camouflage for Lara Croft's real passions: raiding tombs, busting bad guys and throwing herself into one extreme adventure after another. Lara's current mission takes her to worlds of mystery and magic: the ancient Tom of the Dancing Light in Cambodia, and then to Siberia's Temple of Ten Thousand Shadows.

Tomb Raider was already a phenomenon when Paramount Pictures first considered the idea of making it into a feature film. Lara Croft was a megastrar of cyberspace: a fantasy figure to every teenage boy and an icon to every teenage girl.

It was Angelina Jolie first, last and always with West, who says that without her, he would not have done the picture. "It was obvious to me that Angelina Jolie was the only actress who could play Lara Croft," West said once to a popular, film review.
