Aravinda top scores with 77 as NCC are dismissed for 222

By Marlon Fernandopulle
Former Sri Lanka vice captain Aravinda de Silva stroked an elegant 77 as NCC were bundled out for 222 against Colts SC in a Premier League Inter Club game at Havelock Park yesterday.

After the first day's play was washed off play commenced on schedule yesterday. NCC who were invited to bat first struggled against the Colts bowlers who maintained a tidy length. Only the

Together with another former Test cricketer Malinga Bandara, De Silva added 76 for the 7th wicket to help NCC pass the 200 run mark. His innings which was without a blemish ended when he was adjudged lbw to off spinner Sajith Fernando.De Silva struck eight boundaries and a six in his 154 ball innings.

Gayle reigns first, then rain in Matara

  • Tony Greig out
  • R. Fernando reporting from Matara
West Indies coach Roger Harper was not altogether complaining. "Not the ideal preparations. Yes. But at the end of the day all our bowlers had decent spells and most of the batsmen were exposed to the conditions," said Hooper.

"Gayle impressed. Carl Hooper got a hundred. Ganga too hit out. Samuel batted decently. That is good. We can't do much about the weather," said the former off-spinner who was a member of the West Indies touring party in 1993 when they visited Sri Lanka.

When play resumed yesterday, Chris Gayle who made a breathtaking 96 on Friday, was more watchful. But still his hundred came in 106 balls, when he drove leg spinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi for a four. That was his 18th hit to the ropes and he retired after batting for a further 32 minutes having made 120.

Sri Lanka picked up the first West Indies wicket when Darren Ganga nicked one to T.M. Dilshan off Dinusha Fernando having made 54. He had spent 273 minutes at the wicket by then. Wicket-keeper batsman Ridley Jacobs was sent ahead of Lara, preventing the small crowd a glimpse of the Caribbean star. But before long play was called off 40 minutes before the scheduled time due to bad light. Probably they will flock to Galle to watch the maestro bat during the first Test match, weather permitting.

    Tony Greig out

With the new Taj TV Station obtaining rights for covering Sri Lankan cricket, Tony Greig, the former England skipper, who is a popular commentator in Sri Lanka is not available for the Sri Lanka-West Indies cricket series. The first Test between the two countries will commence on Tuesday, November 13, at the Galle Esplanade. Tony Greig has been contracted by Channel 9 of Australia to give commentaries on the on-going Australia-New Zealand series. This was revealed by Mr. Vijaya Malalasekera, Chairman of the Cricket Board's Interim Committee to The Sunday Times yesterday, who said that he had invited Greig to commentate on Sri Lanka games..

    McDonald found dead in Brisbane

MONTE CARLO, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Athletics agent Kim McDonald, who looked after the careers of many top Kenyan runners, has been found dead in a Brisbane apartment, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said on Saturday.

McDonald, who was 45, had fostered the careers of many leading athletes including Kenyans Moses Kiptanui, the three times world steeplechase champion, and Noah Ngeny, the Olympic 1,500 metres champion.

He had also worked with Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan, the 1995 world 5,000 metres champion and Olympic silver medallist last year, and with American 5,000 metres record holder Bob Kennedy.

Rain halts Aussies after Gilchrist century

BRISBANE, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Adam Gilchrist scored his fourth test century to help Australia post an imposing first innings total of 486 for nine declared before rain forced an early end to Saturday's third day of the first cricket test with New Zealand at the Gabba.

Play was officially abandoned after tea with New Zealand 29 without loss in their first innings. There was no play in the final session after the rain forced the players from the field before tea.

There was only 90 minutes of play throughout the day.

Gilchrist made 118 before he fell to fast bowler Chris Cairns after lunch, prompting Steve Waugh to immediately declare because of the forecast of more rain.

Gilchrist had hit 17 boundaries and a six during his dashing innings, which began on Thursday afternoon but was disrupted by two days of showers.

He started the third day unbeaten on 88 and added another 30 before throwing his wicket away chasing quick runs.

Australia began the third day at 435-7 after the start was delayed by almost two hours and only seven overs were completed by lunch.

Brett Lee was dismissed by Cairns, caught by wicketkeeper Adam Parore, in the second over after adding just one run to his overnight score of 60 although television replays showed he did not touch the ball.

Lee, who was just one run shy of his highest test score, made against the West Indies at the Gabba last year, was unhappy at the decision and shook his head in disbelief as umpire Daryl Harper raised his finger.

Harper has already admitted making a mistake on the first day of the match when he gave Australian batsman Justin Langer the benefit of the doubt to a confident lbw appeal from Cairns in the first over of the match.

Langer went on to make a century during a 224 run opening stand with Matthew Hayden and Harper later admitted after watching a replay of the incident that he should have been out.

    Friend inspires Zim victory charge

DHAKA, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Zimbabwe, inspired by an all-round performance by Travis Friend, moved closer to an innings victory in the first test against Bangladesh on Saturday as their bowlers broke through near the end of the third day.

Bangladesh closed on 125 for three, still 199 short of making the touring side bat again.

The main resistance came from Habibul Bashar, who made 65. But the home team's defiance after losing their first wicket cheaply was spoilt in the final four overs, with 20-year-old pace bowler Friend accounting for the key wicket of Bashar.

He and Javed Omar Belim had put on a century stand and taken the score to 108 for one before Belim, on 32, was caught by Henry Olonga at mid-off while facing spinner Douglas Marillier.

Bashar, who hit 10 boundaries, then fell caught at mid-off by Zimbabwean skipper Brian Murphy off Friend.
