Trevor Clive Barthelot

He was a gentleman par excellence
It is with deep sorrow that we record the passing away of Trevor Clive Barthelot, the Assistant Superintendent of Police. Born in 1942, Trevor joined the Police Force at the age of 21 years as a Probationary Sub Inspector.

Apart from being a good Police Officer, he was a gentleman par excellence. His real contribution to the Police Department was in the field of Sports. In the year 1966 at the peak of his sports career, he established the Police record for the Pole Vault event by clearing 11 feet 8 inches.

In recognition of this achievement, the Police Sports Club decided to honour him by donating a challenge trophy in his name at the annual Police Athletic Meet this year. During the Police Sport Meet held in March this year, he volunteered to officiate as a Judge in the Pole Vault event. To the surprise of all, a young Police Sergeant managed to clear a height of 12 feet thus bringing to an end of a 35-year-old record right in front of the holder of the existing record of that event. Later in the day after presenting the Challenge Trophy in his name, he was moved to tears and confided in me that this was one of the happiest days of his life as a sportsman, to witness his own record being bettered.

This single incident proved to me the calibre of the man and the sportsman in him since most people may envy when his name is erased from the record books. We at the Police Sports Club feel happy and privileged to have given this outstanding sportsman, the opportunity to mingle with the young Police Sportsmen during this crucial year.

He leaves behind his wife Bernie and the only daughter Michelle.

Lalith Lekamge,
Senior Superintendent of Police,
Director/Police Sports.

ICC hits errant members hard

By Marlon Fernandopulle
The International Cricket Council (ICC) approved fines of at least US $ 2 million for countries failing to comply with International fixtures and also gave the green light for Countries to play in independent venues following the conclusion of the Executive Board meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

In a Press Release to the Media ICC President Malcolm Gray said, "Cricket in some countries, most notably Pakistan, is in the front line of world events. We need to adopt creative solutions to support those affected and to overcome these problems. In agreeing to use independent venues the Board was totally supportive of countries affected by recent horrific events and unanimous that every effort should be made to assist them,"

The decision means that if a match or series cannot be played at a home venue it can be rescheduled to the opposing team's country or a neutral venue. In either case it would be regarded as a 'home' series for the original host nation.

At the same time, international cricket Boards could face penalties running into millions of dollars for deliberately ignoring obligations under the ICC's Future Tours Program. Stringent new penalties for fixture breakers will be adopted, based on the following process:

Non-complying countries will face financial penalties of at least US$2 million, which would be paid to the affected country. For Test tours, the affected country would receive two ICC Test Championship points, as though it had won the series, with the offending countries further penalised by the deduction of two points.

An ICC Disputes Resolution Committee will adjudicate contested cases. Countries would be exempt from penalties if fixtures were cancelled due to force majeure, natural disaster, war, or where the safety of players and officials was proven to be at risk. The new system will be enforced by binding contract, signed by all Member countries.

Sri Lanka were represented at the ICC meeting by CEO Anura Tennekoon and Chairman Interim Committee Vijaya Malalasekera. An official of the BCCSL confirmed that the Lankan officials had bi-lateral talks with their counterparts in the West Indies and Zimbabwe regarding the forthcoming tours to Sri Lanka.

Following the assurances given on the safety and comfort of the players by the Lankan officials, both West Indies and Zimbabwe re-confirmed their tours to Sri Lanka.

Abeywardena saves Thomians

Hat-trick by Royal skipper Janith Perera
By Bruce Maurice
The toast of all Thomians last night would have been Theruna Abeywardena who enabled them to retain the Dr. Rollo Hayman Trophy for another year in the second leg of the annual Royal- Thomian waterpolo encounter at the Royal pool yesterday which ended in a three all draw. The first leg which was played last week at the Thomian pool ended in 2 all draw.

Royal's skipper Janith Perera drew first blood for Royal, when he scored a tapping goal and in the first quarter it was 1-0 in favour of the host school. Perera had tasted blood and he wanted more. It came when he scored off the bar position to give his side a 2-0 lead. In the third quarter he made it a hat-trick with an immediate shot taken out of the seven metre.

But this was where the Thomians started to come into the game. Wayne De Silva scored in an extra man position to pull Royal's lead back and a few seconds later, Dilhan De Silva scored from the bar to make it 3-2.

When the final quarter started Royal had lost their bearings and this was where Theruna Abeywardena drove the last nail into the Royal coffin to save the Thomians when he scored off the bar to make it 3 all.

In this leg too. Sohan Wu of Royal was fouled three times by the referee and ordered out of the pool. D. Rozairo of Royal was also warned once and so was Eramga Fernando of S. Thomas'.

In the Under15 game S. Thomas' beat Royal 4-2

Sports Editor's note - In an encounter like this which generates quite a lot of tension among old boys of both schools and supporters, it is hoped that from next year onwards neutral referess are appointed to officiate.

BCCSL gets go ahead for bids

By Laila Nasry
An enjoining order issued by the Commercial High Court last Tuesday gave the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) the go-ahead to call for fresh bids with regard to television and other sponsorship rights of the Board.

Commercial High Court Judge W. Wimalachandra granted an enjoining order preventing WSG Nimbus Pvt. Ltd from interfering with the BCCSL from negotiating or entering into contracts with any other party pertaining to any matter, particular those covered by the Master Rights Agreement.

Meanwhile WSG Nimbus is seeking to challenge the enjoining order and is also hoping to file a notice with the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). Further instructions have been issued to the bank to make necessary payments in accordance with its payment obligations. The enjoining order was a result of the agreement between the BCCSL and WSG Nimbus ceasing to operate on October 15, due to the latter defaulting payment subsequent to the West Indies Tour.

According to the settlement reached between the BCCSL and WSG Nimbus Pvt. Ltd. on February 5 2001, following the latter failing to furnish a bank guarantee early this year, it was decided that the agreement entered into would be obsolete in the event of non-payment on specified dates.

Romesh de Silva PC, with Dinal Philips, Hiran de Alwis, Keshan Thalgahagoda, Nilshantha Sirimana and Ranil Prematileke instructed by Julius and Creasy appeared for the BCCSL.

CR out to manacle Police

By Bernie Wijesekera
The revamped CR&FC team will go flat out to manacle Police SC in the Caltex sponsored President's Trophy rugby final today (Sunday) at Longden Place. Kick-off at 5. p.m. In the first-leg in the league championship the Red Shirts were lucky to beat the cops 11-7, in their own backyard. But in the "return" Police did well to beat them 12-9 in a close contest - kicking boots proved a winning factor.

Then came the Clifford Cup K.O. the new-look Police team with return of Norman Silva, the former Sri Lanka prop, lead the 'eight' admirably to outplay the Red Shirts.

This final is going to be a rousing contest between the respective forwards. The Red Shirts with the return of former national coach Ajith Abeyratne, to assist them are playing better and skillful rugby. It has been a winning ploy - thanks to Ajith.

According to Kishan Musafer, who is leading the team says, there is better coordination. The entire team has contributed much for their success story. They did well to beat the Havies and the Army XV to enter this final. CR has forgotten the past and are concentrating on building a team for the future. They are determined to manacle the Cops after suffering two reversals against them this season. The threes look good with young Haren Kaluarachchi and Musafer playing as centres howing up well with their penetrative runs. Asanga Rodrigo in the last line is safe and sure and constantly forming the overlap.

Both teams will go flat out to win this major title - the last in the year 2001 rugby calendar. Let's hope they play it hard, but maintain the spirit of the game which is more important than the final outcome. Hope the crazy fans will leave the Ref. alone rather than trying to control the game from the touch line.

Police 'Griffins' won the Caltex 'B' League beating Galle RFU in the final in Galle.

The teams CR&FC from: Shantha Rohana, Majeed, H. Gabriel, C. Hewasasam, Roshan Perera, H.U. Jayasinghe, C. Abeysuriya, Savantha de Saram (No.8) Shamly Nawaz, C. Nishantha, Roshan Peiris, H. Kalurachchi, K. Musafer (Capt.), N. Ekanayake, Nishantha Kumara, Asanga Rodrigo.

Police SC from: Norman Silva (Capt.), T. Tillekeratne, Muthumala, Aruna Fernando, Upul Peiris, Wilson, Nazeer (No.8), Kulatunga, Aruna Silva, Anjula Silva, Hiran Wijeweera, Nilusha Fernando, Ajantha Rodrigo, C. Thushara, A. Deen, C. Perera S. Dissanayake.
