Cop mix up
A top cop at Police Headquarters was outraged that a close friend, a Chinese national, had been locked up in a City police station. The man was among those reportedly arrested after a raid on a massage parlour.

He walked into the police station and allegedly rescued his Chinese buddy. This infuriated the Officer-in-Charge.

His men at the scene could not give the OIC the exact identity of the top cop. So the OIC went on questioning a few on the physical features of the top cop who resorted to the high handed action.

What followed was reminiscent of Peter Sellers' Pink Panther series where he plays the role of comical Inspector Clauseau. Even his arch rival Inspector Dreyfus would have thought twice before resorting to such action.

The OIC, after his preliminary inquiries asked one of his men to phone another top cop, who was suspected of the action after descriptions of physical features tallied with him. He demanded that the suspect be returned immediately. This top cop is attached to the Police Communications Centre at Mirihana. He had raised hell with the seniormost official responsible for the City. A further probe thereafter had revealed the identity of the real culprit. Insiders say he is to be interdicted.

A senior City Police official said the top cop at Mirihana, who vowed he had not stepped into a massage parlour, had to settle for an apology. "He was not lucky enough to receive a free massage to soothe his hot temper," the official said.

The arms mafia
Opposition circles are talking in whispers of something their leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe and his two member entourage learnt during their recent visit to India.

They had been told six families in Sri Lanka hold the monopoly among themselves for all the major arms deals in Sri Lanka running into billions of rupees.

Was this a revelation made during official meetings or just gossip down the grapevine ? They are tight lipped about who said it.

Lucky escape
A Tiger guerrilla sui cide cadre, arrested only two weeks ago, has made a startling revelation to the police.

Wearing a suicide jacket, he had waited at the Kollupitiya junction consecutively for five days. His target was a VIP, who had travelled past the area many a time. However, the guerrilla had confessed he could not explode himself because he was not sure in which vehicle in a lengthy convoy this VIP travelled.

Safe house
Police have identified a house in Dehiwala as the LTTE hideout from which guerrillas left to carry out suicide attacks on VIPs.

That had included the assassination of Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam on July 29, 1999, by a person identified as Moorthy.

Other attacks included the assassination of late C.V. Gooneratne at Ratmalana on June 7, last year and the suicide bomber who exploded himself at F.R. Senanayake Mawatha on October 19 last year. The names of these two assassins are yet to be disclosed like the men who ran the operation.
