Bonikko deals with problems of unmarried mothers

The bond between a mother and her child is so strong it has the power to heal the traumatic scars on the psyche of parent or offspring. This is the moral of the heart-warming new teledrama "Bonikko" which begins telecast over Rupavahini on Thursday December 14.

Staring Yasodha Wimaladharma, Sriyantha Mendis, Chandani Seneviratne and debutant Subhani Prisika, "Bonikko" is the story of a five-year-old girl who is deprived of her mother's love by the divorce of her parents, and of a lonely 25-year-old woman traumatized by the loss of the child she conceived out of wedlock. Buffeted by the insensitive actions of family and friends, the two find in each other, the emotional sustenance they need to be whole again.

"Family strife is not a new theme in the local teledrama world, but I believe this is the first time that its impact is shown through the eyes of a child", says Nalan Mendis, the award winning director of the 24-episode drama. "It is also possibly the first teledrama to cast a child in a leading role. The whole story revolves around the character of Surangi (played by Prisika) and the success of the production depends on the emotions she evokes in the audience."

Yasodha Wimaladharma who plays the role of Sujatha, a wholesome young woman who becomes mentally disturbed after her parents force her to give up her illegitimate child at birth, says "Bonikko" will strike a chord in parents and children of all ages." A mother needs the love of a child just as much as a child needs its mother", she stresses. "This is a theme that is very relevant to our society today, and "Bonikko" will emphasize the healing of this love."

"Bonikko" also carries a strong message to people who are faced with the problem of unmarried mothers, Yasodha added. "The message is that those who are dealing with this problem should understand the situation of the victims and be sympathetic".

Lead actor Sriyantha Mendis, who portrays Surangi's father Suneth, adds, "Our society still cherishes the value of parent-child love. Most parents are still very protective of their children. "Bonikko" will be a new experience from a much-loved theme".

The production and telecast of "Bonikko" is sponsored by Hayleys Electronics, the sole agent in Sri Lanka for Philips, Daewoo, Usha and Daytron consumer electronic products. The teledrama is produced by Sandya Mendis for Susil Productions and also stars Manel Jayasena, H.A. Perera, Gamini Hettiarachchi, Srinath Maddumage, Anoma Nandani Wijeratne and Ratnavali Kekunawela. "Bonikko" is scripted by Reginald Jayamanne and is based on a story written by the well-known picture storywriter Janaka Ratnayake.

"Bonikko" is scheduled for telecast at 8.30 p.m. every Thursday on Rupavahini commencing December 14.
