Aquarius back in action

By Sanath Weerasuriya
Benji and his boys are now back in Colombo after a successful tour in Doha Qatar.

Leading western band in Sri Lanka, " Aquarius" mixed a Sri Lankan oriental touch to give the light in the " Tour of Asia" held at Al Riyadh Hall in Hotel Sofitel Doha Palace in Doha, Qatar on May 4, 5 and 6.

Indian, Indonesian, Philippine and Sri Lankan Embassies had given a Cutural show which garnished the exclusive cuisine prepared by mixed national kitchen of Hotel Sofitel.

Rozanne, female vocalist of Aquarius, popularly known as Sri Lanka's Janet Jackson was the talk of the town. Starting from Thursday the May 4 and the following 3 nights the Dinner Dance and the Musical evening was packed to the maximum. The line of music was starting from the oldies way back from the 60's to the current hits.

Benjy Ranabahu, Shiran Munasinghe , Raja Mendis, Ranil Vas, Sampath Nanayakkara and Rozanne Fernando did not forget to bring the Sri Lankan Group songs and the Non-stop Baila to add glamour to the nights. Guest of honour was Chanaka Olagama , the SriLankan Airlines Manager for Qatar. 'Aquarius' are now back at 'Cyclone ' , one of the popular night clubs in Colombo, after their successful stint in Doha.

'We have few more foreign tours on the cards but we are more keen to perform in Sri Lanka.

If we get short tours of one week to ten days we do not mind going anywhere , but long tours are really out of our minds,' Benji said.

'Magul Sakwala': story of middleage romance

On Rupavahini every Thursday at prime time is shown a mini film, that is bound to stir the emotions of many TV audiences - young and old, alike. Based on a story by veteran author Kumara Karunaratne, Magul Sakwala portrays the sentiments of a man who has passed his middle-age, but immersed in romance of a sort.

The cast of this TV film includes Linton Semage, Palitha Silva, Gayana Sudharshani, Priya Ranasinghe, Ellen Sylvester, Srimathi Heenatigala among others.

Men and women of our planet live amidst manifold experiences as we live in different surroundings. More often than not, men and women who pass their 50s have no pre-occupations with romance, but Herath in our story, is a far-cry from them.

Magul Sakwala is a story that is different from the normal tales dished out via the small screen.

Senaka (Palitha Silva) is a young man, who though in his prime, is not interested in crushes of romance. Nor is he interested in money inspite of being a school teacher.

Even his dad's wealth does not bother him. But Herath (Linton Semage) his father, is a far cry from the son, in that his old age notwithstanding, he decides to re-marry, after the demise of Senaka's mother. But he is over age for that type of adventure, and invariably messes up his life.

While Senaka's idea is to be away from responsibilities and other ties in life, father Herath is totally different to the son. He brings a damsel who is younger than his daughter Anoma (Priya Ranasinghe) once he decided to re-marry.

Wimalawathie (Gayana Sudharshani) is herself a widow though young still, but marries eyeing Herath's fortune. The children protest, but Herath is least concerned about their opinion. To look younger than his age, Herath dyes his hair and spares no pains to look a suitable partner to Wimalawathie. Herath is now taunted with suspicion. He suspects all males of Wimalawathie's age, and son, Senaka is no exception. Another relative of his, who kept his company in the nights, is now asked not to step into his home. Anoma does not approve of her father's new marriage, and is hostile towards Wimalawathie, whom she suspects to be more interested in their fortune, than in her old father. She is out to oust the new bride of Herath at any cost, and tries all sorts of gimmicks.

Meanwhile Herath falls sick, and the son and daughter are keen to help the father, to recover quickly. But Herath does not want Senaka, to be in his home, suspecting that he would flaunt an affair with Wimalawathie. Senaka is asked to move out, and he rents out a room and lives away from home and Wimalawathie. Herath's sickness grows worse. Senaka and sister take him to hospital but he returns the next day afraid, that Senaka and Wimalawathie are left at home, a thought that traumtizes Herath unceasingly.

Anoma, now fearing that in the event of Herath's death, all his properties would be owned by her step-mother, plans to get her brother, live at home to confront Wimalawathie's claims to any of their fortune.

Herath now passes away at home, as no proper treatment or medical aid is rendered to him. What would happen now? Will Wimalawathie be the owner of all of Herath's wealth? Will she entangle herself with Senaka, who will come to reside in his father's home? Will Anoma succeed in her plans to oust Wimalawathie even now? All these questions will be answered by the 13 episode drama that it titled 'Magul Sakwala' by Director, Christie Shelton Fernando, who has good reasons to compare this story, with the Parabhawa Suthraya, taught by the Enlightened One, wherein it is said, that an old man must not marry a young woman, as such a union tends to send the marriage reeling with suspicion.

The filming was done around Kuliyapitiya said Director Christie Shelton Fernando who has been ably assisted by colleague Vijitha Ratnasena in the direction. Pushpakumara Rajaguru has controlled the camera, while editing has been done by Sanjay Gunawardene. Sisira Chandra Wijesinghe is the Art Director while the musical score is by Sarath Wickrema.

"Ratnaloka" : The light of Ratnapura

By Sanath Weerasuriya
A room with a viewThough Ratnapura district is popular for gems, it has never attracted tourists as a destination. Main reason I can think is the lack of promotion as a nature-friendly destination.

Ratnapura district has inherited some of the best eco-friendly environmental assets in Sri Lanka.

Rare birds, rare plants, rich scenic beauty and mainly as the base city for 'Sinharaja Forest', the only tropical rainforest that exists at the moment in this part of the globe.

With all these in mind "Ratnaloka Tour Inn', started its operations in 1980.

'Ratnaloka Tour Inn' is the biggest and the most popular resort hotel in Ratnapura, which is situated in Kahangama, just six kms. away from the gem city on Ratnapura-Panadura highway.

Ratnaloka Tour Inn (RTI) has forty one standard rooms and twelve deluxe rooms.

'We get mainly nature tours. Sinharaja forest and other excursions are the main attractions of the hotel' said Gamini Chandana Ratne, its Director/General Manager.

The tour groups spend two to three nights at the hotel to explore the area and to go for "Sinharaja Safari" during day time or night.

'Night Safari' is quite popular but, we do not encourage our visitors to go safari during dark hours, mainly because of the danger, he said.

Sinharaja forest is about 80 kms. away from the hotel and about two hours drive.

'During excursions, the tour group has to leave the hotel in early hours at least around 5.00 am.

The hotel provides their breakfast and lunch in take-away style' Gamini explained.

Their Marketing Manager, S. Ramachandran is the key person in promotional drive and he said not only foreign tourists but also Sri Lankans too are encouraged to use this beautiful eco-friendly environment as their holiday destination. Batatota Rock Cave, Uda Walave National Park and Kooragala Rock Cave are some of the attractions for excursions, which are about one and half to two hours drive away from the hotel.

There are about six major waterfalls just in ten kilometre range - namely Katugas Ella, Duwili Ella, Induruwa Ella, Bopath Ella (20kms), Rajana Ella and Alupola Ella. Maha Saman Devalaya, Delgamuwa Viha-raya, Lellopitiya Meditation Centre and Pothgulviharaya are some of the historic temples around the area.

The Hotel has a big swimming pool, kids' pool and a large garden, IDD facility, large restaurant, A/C Bar and mini bars at rooms are some of the main attractions at the hotel. An Ayurvedic Centre will be their future addition. 'We will be refurbishing the hotel and will add all the modern facilities to the hotel,' Gamini said.

Also they have a plan to promote gem mining, tea plucking, rubber tapping as a part of the package for tourists who visit the hotel.

Ratnaloka Tour Inn is also popular as 'the place' for special weddings and other functions in the Ratnapura area.

Leading Spanish travel magazine 'Mercado Mondial' has awarded its 1999 'Eco-friendly hotel' award to Ratnaloka Tour Inn in January this year in a grand ceremony held in Madrid.

The drama is the first production by Nita Fernando who won the award for Best Actress at the 11th Singapore International Film Festival in 1998. Nita is also palying in a major role in the drama.

Jayanada a hotel manager is a kind hearted person.

His wife a school teacher and his two chidren too think alike and they run an orphanage with the help of the Chief Priest of the near by temple.

Although Dhanapala a businessman is close friend of Jaya-nada, his qualities are not that of a genuine friend.

After some time they develop a misunderstanding and distance themselves from each other over a land dispute.

Dhanapala looks for an opportunity to take revenge from Jayanada and with the assistance of a worker in Jaya-nada's orphanage, he sells one of the children as servants.

But at last Jayananda proves his innocence and police arrest the real culprits.

The haven on Bentota beach

By Sanath Weerasuriya
What could be more memorable and more enchanting than spending a few days and few nights in secluded colonial style villa on the beach?

'Taprobana' in Bentota is the true haven on the beach. This nine room beach resort on about half an acre was designed and built by Swiss architect Ricco Taravella and owned by a Sri Lankan now living abroad.

The typical southern old walauwa type resort is now managed by Aura Hotel Services Limited, the newest hotel management company in town.

'Taprobana' is just five minutes away from Bentota bridge. This is an old walauwa with new expansions with a Swiss touch.

'The most unique in this place is the personalized service' said the manager Frank Kelaart of 'Taprobana'.

Most of the guests coming to this place are on 'half board' basis and have a choice of their own from the a la carte menu.

"Meals are prepared, according to customer requirements. Our motto is "Service Beyond Hospitality" said Frank.

The restaurant, which is open to the sea breeze, serves a complete array of both Eastern and Western cuisine and home- made recipes. Also they serve sea food dishes from chef Ajith Rohana.

'Taprobana' is a place with absolute privacy where we treat and respect individuals in a homely atmosphere' he said.

All nine rooms are open to the sea and stylishly decorated with elegant but simple furniture that enhances the embience. All rooms have private verandas and attached bathrooms with hot and cold water.

'This is very popular among Sir Lankans, expatriates, diplomats and also among honeymooners' a spokesman for Aura Hotels said.

Sri Lankans are much keen to spend a 'get-away' holiday but overseas visitors are very much interested in exploring the area.

'Madol Duwa' at Koggala, mask factories at Ambalangoda, Turtle Farm, Brief Garden at Kalawila, river safari down Bentara river are some of the attractions on offer for visitors.

Manager Frank is a capable hand with years of experience behind him. He has 24 years experience in the hospitality business in Sri Lanka as well as abroad. 'Quality personalized service is my main vision in this project." he said.

Aura Hotels also manages the 'Club Villa', an exclusive Dutch style country retreat, which has 17 rooms in Bentota.

Both 'Club Villa' and 'Tabrobana' are in close proximity and run under the supervision of Frank Kelaart.

'Trojan Kanthawo' and the futility of war

Versatile dramatist Dharmasiri Bandaranayake's "Trojan Kanthawo" (Trojan Women), translation of Euripides's anti-war tragic play will be staged in the indoor stadium of Maris Stella College Negombo today at 7 p.m.

'Trojan Women' is set in the background of the fall of Troy, with all it's attendant suffering of the families of the city's defeated leaders, in particular the old Trojan Queen Hecuba and the other royal women. Women were the most affected having to undergo untold hardships. Andromache's son Astyanax is taken from her and hurled to his death from the walls of Troy. Finally as Troy goes up in flames, Hecuba and the other Trojan women are carried off to the ships to face slavery in Greece.

Euripides (480-406 BC) who wrote the Trojan Women in 415 BC was one of Athen's three great tragic dramatists. The play is timely and is a powerful indictment of the babarous cruelties of war.

The superb cast of over 70 characters brings a combination from both English and Sinhal theatre.

With the opening scene itself the director has been able to take a grip on the audience by showing the women of Troy being treated cruelly. Old queen of Troy, Hecuba played by Anoja Weerasinghe gives a sterling performance . In addition the rich selection of cast includes Yashoda Wimaladharma playing as Andromache.

Talented Neil Alles' role as 'Poseidon' is also outstanding and Hecuba's daughter played by Meena Kumari is remarkable in her role.

The director brings English theatre personality Jehan Aloysius to do the role of Menelaus and Juanita Beiling plays 'Helen'. The translation of the classic has been done by Ariya Ranaweera, Theatre script by Ananda Wakkumbura and Dharmasiri Bandaranayake. Talented music director Rukantha Gunathilake gives colour to the play with the music direction. Bringing well known names in the English drama Bandaranayake joins Jerom de Silva for the choreography in 'Trojan Kanthawo'.

The film is produced and directed by veteran Actor, and Director Sathischandra Edirisinghe and has the folowing big names in its cast. Nilanthi Wijesinghe plays as a wife of Nilame of Amunugoda Walauwa and Sathis is her husband the Nilame. Sriyantha Mendis, Yasodha Wimaladharma, Channa Perera, Damayanthi Fonseka, Buddhi Wickrema, (My office mate in the Survey Dept,).

Ananda Wickramage, Indrajith Nawinna, Chitra Warakagoda, the late Wimal Wickramasinghe of Kopi-kade fame, Chandra Kaluarachchi and Paboday Sandipani are the big names in the huge cast.

The Music Director of Sathmahala is veteran music director Rohana Weerasinghe, while Editing has been done by Daya Punchihewa. Mani Mendis is its Art Director and Daya Sooriyarachchi has managed the camera. The Asst. Director is Anura Waragoda while the Executive Producer is Sriya Edirisinghe. ' Sathmahala' is a story set in a Waluwa located in the salubrious hilly chimes of Kandy adjacient to a tea estate. The walawa is known as Amunugoda walawa while the estate in its vicinity is called Rose Valley. If you remember the political climatic change subsequent to the SLFP-MEP peoples' victory of 1956, you will recall that the General Election spearheaded the President's father S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike initiated a cultural revolution in our Isle, where Sinhala culture came to the fore, while the poor man the average or the illiterate, was enthrouned courtesy the landslide victory of SWRD, drowning the age of the affluent and the rich-sophisticated men and women of that era.

'Sathmahala' is based on a story with this backdrop in mind . Like else where in our country, the rich the so called feudals and the aristocrats, came, tumbling down, while the man in the street received recognition as an honourable individual, something the rich and affluent had failed to grasp till that time. With this revolutionary change, the 'Amunugoda palanthiya' too was shattered to its foundations. All the while , the lot of the common man even in the Udarata was a neglected one, but with the fall of feudalism the Walawe mentality had to take a back seat, and these worshipping the feudal Radalayas in Udarata, came to the fore and their worth was felt at last much to the chagrin of aristocrats. A story with this background set the pace for 'Sathmahala' and those who are privy to the change or the cultural cum religious rennaisance during the post 1956 era are told how the change affected the Wansakkara clan.

The story is by famous writer Ranjith Dharmakirthi and the synopsis of the tele-drama is as follows. The Nilame and Menike of Amunugoda Walauwa are Sathis and Nilanthi Wijesinghe. The couple has a son and three daughters. Channa is cast in the role of Loku Nilame's son, while the roles of daughters are played by Yasoda Wimaladharma, (Sumedha) Damayanthi Fonseka (Navaratne Menike) and Paboda Sandipani (Thamari). Tikiri Bandara is their only brother (Channa ). Sumedha finishes her varsity career and gets employment as a teacher, only to fall in love with a fellow teacher Hemantha, played by Sriyantha Mendis.

The new couple's marriage does not earn the consent of the Walauwa and the Loku Nilame together with Tikiri Bandara in particular are wrathed about it. Meanwhile the newly-weds move away to Kurunegala and reside there. In due course, nuptial proposals are brought to Navaratne Menike which however fail to materialise, making more inroads into the Walauwa image . Most of such proposals find no favour with the Walauwa elders, mainly due to caste problems and status posers. Consequently Navaratne Menike grows in age while Thamari moves into Kurunegala in an attempt to further her studies. She decides to reside at her brother's residence only to be highly influenced by the sophisticated culture of the metro area.

Back home, things change for the worse when relations between the Walauwa and Rose Valley Estate are strained. This is because the Supdt. of the Estate (Ananda Wickremage) and Loku Nilame fall out. Subsequent to these strained relations, the Supdt. goes on a employment canvassing spree, resulting in many of the village folk, seeking easy employment in the Estate, shedding the Wedwasam type slavery in the homes of the feudals.

A figure-head in Amunugoda Walauwa among the dasa-clan, (Indrajith Nawinna) is one of those who gets employment, courtesy the Superientendant. As the Estate doubles its profits with the influx of new labour, the Walauwa runs short of servants who normally attend to all and sundry there. Loku Nilame and his palace is almost isolated, sans workers, now a rare commodity.

The falling apart of the Walauwa image together with the cultural rejuvenation, brought about by the 1956 defeat of aristocratic forces, had a thumping impact on the Udrata feudal clans, and Amunugoda Walauwe was no exception.

With the image of the Loku Nilame tarnished, the Walauwa had other problems too. Navaratne Menike's chances of marriage dwindled with time, and the parents had no option but to give her in marriage to a useless man, though with a feudal back ground. But the marriage is a flop save status wise. As if to inject a little badly-needed life into the Walauwa, Tikiri Bandara qualifies as an Attorney, an the noble parents try their best to stage a come back, Given the politically new background this is unseccessful and in a last ditch, the old couple attempts to find solace in getting Thamari to marry a nobleman. In contrast, she selects a commoner and marries him, much to the ire of her parents. She had been influenced by the cultural milieu of the metro area in in Kurunegala town.

This final episode sees the walanwa -minded Loku Nilame raving mad. Meanwhile a boulder that had blocked the access road to the Estate all this while, is dynamited and the crash of the rock, symbolises the crash of the walauwa image. Sathmahala has portrayed well the social changes that came alongside the defeat of the country's reactionary feudal forces, and it has been well handled by the maestro Sathischandra Edirisinghe.
