Celine's rift with the tabloids

Muzic news

by Miles Brohier
Canadian singer Celine Dion is suing the US tabloid the National Enquirer, for US $ 20 million. The paper is alleged to have published a story saying Celine was expecting twins. The Canadian singer was said to be hurt by the news item but hoped it was true.

Celine Dion has taken 2 years off from the public eye and showbiz in order to start a family with husband Rene.

Meanwhile her new single 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', entered the UK Top 20 this week at No.19. The track is taken from her greatest hits collect 'All The Way... A Decade of Song'. While Celine introduces the song to a new generation, it is not the kind of song one would associate with her. It was originally released by Roberta Flack back in 1972, And peaked at No.14 in the UK. Celine's latest single 'That's The Way It Is', peaked at No.20 in January this year.

The three surviving members of the Beatles are to reunite on paper shortly. It was revealed last Monday that Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr have completed what is 'The Beatles Anthology'. The trio who are expected to earn something like £2 million have been writing their part of the book for the past 3 years. The new book is to be published this autumn.

They conquered the US singles chart a few weeks ago. Now they turn over to the UK for the kill with the same hit 'Say My Name', which checked into the chart at No:3. The song is the all girl quartets best performance in the UK. Success to Destiny's Child come hot on the heals of 2 changes to the line up of the group 2 months ago. 'Say My Name' is taken from their album 'The Writings On The Wall'.

Soul music on the lines of the material produced in the late Seventies is evident in the new Montell Jordon single 'Get It On Tonite'. The Los Angeles born singer, delivers the song in the manner soul music fans would like it to be performed. 'Get It On Tonite', is another piece of Soul going places in the US Top 10 now extending it's tenticles across the Atlantic to the shores of the UK. The song which is the title track of Jordon's forthcoming album entered the UK singles chart at No: 15 this week.

The Irish group Westlife are the champs once again. Their new single ' Fool Again', went straight to the top of the UK singles chart this week. The formula for this song is Ronan Keating's 'When You Say Nothing At All.' It's the public's choice by and large in terms of sales for the week ending last Saturday. Hence it gives the 5 lads of Westlife their 3rd consecutive UK No: 1 song after 'Swear It Again' and 'I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun'.

Phil Collins' action in the High Court of London to recover over payment from 2 former backing members commenced last week. Collins in his law suit says he over paid Rhambe Davis and Louis Satterfield as much as 3 times their dues for work in 1990. He is trying to recover £1 1/2 million. Both Davis and Satterfield flew to England to defend themselves.

They apparently borrowed money to go to London and further could not afford to pay for their defence. The two for Earth Wind & Fire members have sold their homes and instruments and are too old to work in order to be able pay back Phil Collins.

Chynna Phillips the one time half of the duo Wilson Phillips is the mother of a baby girl. She and husband Billy Balwin celebrated the arrival of their new born baby Jamison recently.
